Tickets for the largest ever 2011 Western & Southern Open go on sale today.
The event takes place Aug. 13-21 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. For the first time ever, the venue will host top-tier men’s and women’s tournaments simultaneously during the same week.
The new combined format joins Rome, Madrid, Miami and Indian Wells (near Palm Springs, CA) as the only other cities in the world hosting the same caliber events for both sexes at the same time.
“For the first time the entire world of tennis will be focused on Cincinnati for one week,” said tournament CEO Elaine Bruening. “Now fans won’t have to choose between seeing the men one day or the women another, one trip to the event and they can see the best from both tours.”
This marks the 113th year since the tournament debuted in Cincinnati. The world’s top professional tennis players will compete for the richest purse in the event’s history, totaling $5.2 million.
Last year, Roger Federer earned $443,500 on his way to winning for a fourth time, and Kim Clijsters earned $350,000 by holding off Maria Sharapova in the finals on the way to her first victory in Cincinnati.
This year, champions’ purses for the men and women will rise to $496,000 and $360,000 respectively.
To make room for the larger event, the Lindner Family Tennis Center is currently undergoing a 5.4 acre expansion adding six new courts, including a new 4,000-seat third television court. Other additions include a new entrance and ticket office, retail plaza and family restrooms.
The project is the second major expansion at the Mason site in the last two years.
Ticker prices range all the way from $5 for a child’s seat at a qualifier to $695 for a top seat for the whole series.
