The Mason Comets faced off against Springboro this evening in what coaches describe as an “historical rivalry.”
The two Warren County schools, both founding members of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference, developed a fierce rivalry during the 1970s and 1980s with both teams racking up a combined 15 FAVC conference titles.
The rivalry waned as Springboro moved on to the Greater Western Ohio Conference and Mason to the Greater Miami Conference.
Tonight the gauntlet was renewed at Springboro’s Careflight Field in Mason’s season opener and ended with the Comets claiming bragging rights with a 38-28 victory against the Panthers.
The Comets next face off against Lancaster on Sept. 2 at Mason.
