Shannon Russell reports:
Rafael Nadal won’t make his injury comeback at the Western & Southern Open after all.
Left knee tendonitis kept the ATP World Tour’s third-ranked player out of the Olympics, where he was slated to carry Spain’s flag in the opening ceremony, and the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Uncle and coach Toni Nadal recently told Spanish media that the Mason tournament was likely to mark the player’s return. But Rafael Nadal announced today via Twitter that he will not be making the trip to the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
“I won’t be playing at Cincinnati Open,” Nadal wrote. “I am still not ready to play. I have unforgettable moments in 2008. I am continuing with my recup.”
The 11-time Grand Slam singles champion has twice reached the W&S Open semifinals (2009, 2008) but not the finals. Last year he was ousted by American Mardy Fish in a quarterfinal.
