Comets plan a packed lineup to celebrate football home opener

A pre-game tailgate and a Hall of Fame induction ceremony are just some of the festivities planned to celebrate Mason High School’s first home game of the season.

The Comets face off against Springboro at 7:30 p.m. this evening at the school’s Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium, 4100 Mason-Montgomery Road.

An annual pre-game tailgate party kicks off at 5 p.m. and features dozens of game and food booths sponsored by boosters, student organizations and local businesses.

Friday’s festivities also include Youth Football and Cheerleading Night.  Youth players and cheerleaders in uniform will receive free admission with an adult paying chaperone.

The school will induct seven alumni into its Hall of Fame during a special half-time ceremony. The 32nd induction class includes:

  • Jamie Elswick, 1980
    Elswick earned seven varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball and was twice named Fort Ancient Valley Conference 1st Team All-Conference in baseball. He earned the Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC) Player of the Year award in 1980. Elswick went on to play baseball at Eastern Kentucky University.
  • Angie D. Thomes, 1985
    The softball and soccer standout earned varsity letters and was named to the 1st Team All-FAVC team in both sports. In softball, she was awarded the FAVC Player of the Year in 1985. After graduation, she played softball at Sinclair Community College where she was a two-time Great Lakes Junior College Conference 1st Team All-Conference selection.
  • Tracey B. Dwire, 1988
    Considered one of the most acclaimed athletes in Mason’s tennis program history, Dwire earned multiple FAVC honors while being named the FAVC Player of the Year his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Dwire earned additional tennis honors at William Carey University in Miss. and Bowling Green State University.
  • Billy Highfill, 1993
    The football and baseball standout, Highfill helped lead the Comets to FAVC baseball championships in 1990 and 1992 and an OHSAA District Championship in 1990. He was named 1st Team FAVC All-Conference in both baseball and football.
  • T.J. Lichtenberg, 1993
    The three-sport athlete excelled in football, basketball and baseball, earning FAVC All-Conference honors in all three sports. Lichtenberg was selected to compete in the East vs. West All Star football game his senior year.
  • Gina M. Salzarulo-Wickelhaus, 1994
    A multiple-sport athlete, Salzarulo-Wickelhaus earned varsity letters in volleyball and track and field. A three-time 1st Team FAVC All-Conference selection, Salzarulo-Wickelhaus helped lead the Comets to an FAVC Championship in 1991 and 1992, OHSAA District Championships in 1993 and 1994 and a regional championship in 1994.
  • Robert Goode, 1997
    Goode racked up 10 varsity letters in cross country, track and field and basketball at Mason. A six-time 1st Team FAVC All-Conference selectee in cross country and track and field, Goode helped lead the Comets to three FAVC team championships in cross country and two in track and field. He was named the FAVC Runner of the Year in both cross country and track and field his senior year and graduated with records in the 6400 relay, 1600 medley, distance medley and 3200 medley events.

Ticket prices are $7 for adults; $7 for students in grades 7-12 ($4 in advance); $4 for students in grades 6 and under and free for senior citizens.

Tickets may be purchased in advance between 9-11 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. at the Mason High School Athletic Office or from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mason Middle School Commons.
