Michael Stainbrook reports:
Mason took first place with a team total of 312 Monday at the the Division I girls’ golf Indian Springs sectional tournament held at Walden Ponds Golf Club.
Tara Liebert finished with a team-best 74 to anchor the Comets. Liebert showed tremendous power off the tee, which allowed her to reach the green of the par four third hole with one fluid swing of her driver.
All five Mason golfers finished with scores in the 70s or 80s.
“We’re very united as a team,” Comets coach Karen Binzel said. “We have eight girls on the team that could shoot any of these scores. They’ve been training really hard and have a goal in mind, and the goal is to make it to the state [tournament] and to contend at state.”
St. Ursula junior Carolyn Markley shot a 4-under-par 68 to carry St. Ursula to a second place.
Along with Mason and St. Ursula, Seton and Lakota East qualified for the district tournament by finishing with team scores of 355 and 359, respectively. Those four squads were the only teams to have every individual finish with a score of less than 100.
Four players not on qualifying teams also advanced to the district tournament. Mercy sophomore Emily House (93), Kings senior Caity Adams (93), Turpin junior Miranda Buck (94) and Winton Woods junior ZeAijah Mooney (95) will play at Weatherwax Golf Course next Thursday. Mooney beat teammate Taylor Kinley in a one-hole playoff for the final berth.
