Senior Darryl Johnson, who rushed for a career-high 229 yards and scored two touchdowns on 33 carries, led Mason to a 28-13 win over Lakota East on Friday night.

The win gave Mason, ranked No. 10 in The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Division I coaches poll, its second straight win and improved its record to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Greater Miami Conference. Meanwhile, Lakota East, who entered the game No. 7 in The Enquirer’s poll, falls to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the GMC.

Leading 14-13 at halftime, the Comet’s defense held Lakota East scoreless the rest of the way, while Johnson scored on touchdown runs of one and nine yards in the second half.

Johnson’s latest rushing performance brings up his season total, through eight games, to 1,274 yards and 12 touchdowns on 204 carries. He also has eight receptions for 137 yards and a score.

In the win against the Thunderhawks, Mason trailed early when senior Will Mahone gave Lakota East a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter after he punched in a 1-yard touchdown run.

Mason quickly responded with a 20-yard pass play from junior Jensen Harris to senior Adam Osika, which gave the Comets a 7-6 lead.

Again in the second quarter, both teams traded scores. First, Lakota East junior quarterback Eric Eichler scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, making the score 13-7 with 1:30 left in the first half. Then, with 30 seconds left until halftime, senior Jalen Mayo scored on a 12-yard pass from Harris – giving Mason a 14-13 lead at the break.

Besides Johnson, other standouts for Mason included Harris, who completed 12-of-16 passes for 174 yards (also had two interceptions) and Osika, who caught seven passes for 97 yards.

Next Friday, Mason will be on the road at Princeton (1-7 overall, 1-4 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m.
