Kevin Kelly reports:
Mason and Moeller earned the top two seeds in Division I at the Southwest District’s sectional baseball draw Sunday at Lakota West.
Sectional play for area teams starts May 13 for Divisions III and IV and May 14 for Divisions I and II.
Top-seeded Mason (20-0) enters the final week of the regular season ranked No.1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area baseball coaches’ poll and No.1 in the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association statewide poll.
The Comets will start the postseason by playing host to either Walnut Hills (11-10) or Northwest (7-13) on May 16.
“I like the way we’re playing right now,” Mason coach Ken Gray said. “But in Division I, there are probably 20 teams that on any given day are capable of beating anybody. That’s just the way it is with the baseball here … You’ve got to come out ready to play and play a clean game, have quality at-bats and have a guy on the mound on his game.”
Sunday’s draw meeting included 33 Division I teams. Coaches had five brackets from which to choose a slot for their team, and the order of selection was based on seeding.
The highest seeded team in Mason’s bracket is Oak Hills (12-9) at No.10.
Moeller won the Division I state championship last season and received the No.2 seed. Ranked No.2 in the area coaches’ poll and statewide poll, the Crusaders will play host to either Western Hills (16-4) or Anderson (9-14) on May 16. At No.12, Talawanda (17-5) is the highest seed in the Crusaders’ bracket.
Moeller has won seven consecutive games and is 19-2 overall. It’s only losses were against La Salle and Milford. The Crusaders are scheduled to play La Salle (13-9) at 4:30 p.m. today at Schuler Park.
“We’re playing well,” Moeller coach Tim Held said. “I think (the losses) helped to refocus them. It took some pressure off after starting out undefeated … So now we can just go out and play baseball.”
The Division I sectional finals for area teams will be played May 23 at Lakota West, Western Hills, Lakota East, Kings and Harrison. Mason and Moeller would not cross paths until the regional championship.
New Richmond (18-4) earned the top seed in the Division II sectional draw Sunday at Lakota West and will play Wilmington (5-16) on May 14. The winner advances to play McNicholas (9-10) on May 16.
Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (19-4) grabbed the No.1 seed in a Division III sectional draw Sunday at the Miami Township Civic Center. CHCA will play host to North College Hill (2-13) on May 13.
The Nos.2-6 seeds all choose the opposite bracket from CHCA. Madeira (18-5) earned the No.2 seed and will play host to Georgetown (1-13) on May 13.
Madeira and CHCA share the No.1 ranking in The Enquirer Division II-IV area baseball coaches’ poll but CHCA occupies the No.1 ranking exclusively in the Division III state poll.
The sectional softball tournament for area teams starts May 13 for Division I and III and May 14 for Divisions II and IV.
Oak Hills (19-3) earned the No.1 seed at Sunday’s Division I sectional softball draw at Lakota West and will play host to the winner of Walnut Hills (11-10) and Northwest (0-18) on May 15. Ross (17-4) received a No.1 seed in a Division II sectional draw and will open tournament play against Norwood (2-14) on May 14.
Lebanon (19-2) is No.1 in the Enquirer Division I area softball coaches’ poll and earned a No.1 seed for its sectional. It will play either Wayne (7-12) or West Carrollton (7-12) on May 15. In Division III softball, Clermont Northeastern (15-4) garnered a No.1 seed. The Rockets, who are No.1 in The Enquirer’s Division II-IV poll, will play Mariemont (0-18) on May 13.
Also on Sunday, the boys’ tennis sectional seed meeting was held at St. Xavier.
In Division I, St. Xavier’s Andrew Niehaus received the No.1 seed in Division I singles while the Bombers’ Matt Duma and Matt Santen will enter the sectional tournament as the top seed in doubles. In Division II, Cincinnati Country Day’s Asher Hirsch earned the No.1 seed in singles and Indian Hill’s Raghav Joshi and Will Jorsszewicz earned the No.1 seed in doubles.
The sectional tournament main draw is scheduled to start May 16 for Division I and May 17 for Division II at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. The semifinals, consolation and finals for both divisions are scheduled May 18 at the same location.
