Coffee and wine aficionados will have a new place to get their fix in downtown Mason.
Renovations are underway to relocate and expand Kidd Coffee into the former I Love Sushi restaurant at 653 Reading Road.
By day, the new Kidd Coffee and Wine Bar will continue to serve up caffeinated beverages. But at night, the restaurant will transition to a chic wine bar with an assortment of wines and food pairings.
Business owner Victor Kidd said the coffee-wine hybrid is a new concept that’s gaining in popularity.
“Wine is sort of a natural companion to coffee because the primary market for coffee is morning and the primary market for wine is evening,” he said. “People tend to bring a similar kind of interest and attitude as they do towards coffee to wine.”
Kidd is renovating the 1,500 square-foot orange and yellow house with red shutters — what he calls the “ugliest building in downtown Mason” — into an elegant venue with high-end finishes and a stone cottage type facade.
The business is expected to open at its new location in early October. Until then, the coffee shop will continue to operate at its current location at 322 Reading Road.
Kidd, a pastor and vice mayor of Mason, first launched the coffee shop in 1999 and business has been percolating ever since. The new venture is the 19th store he’s opened or consulted on here and in Kentucky and Florida in four years.
The new wine bar will offer up an assortment of wines with food pairings including fondue. Kidd said he’s still working to finalize the menu with local chefs. He’d like to eventually expand with an upstairs cigar room.
The new location — just down the road from the current coffee shop — proved to be a serendipitous find, said Kidd.
“I was really committed to downtown Mason because I really love Mason. This worked out perfectly at just the right time,” he said.
