Gun-control advocates to rally Thursday

Posted by rrichardson March 27th, 2013, 11:23 am Post a Comment

Gun-control advocates from across the region will hold petition drives at two events in Greater Cincinnati Thursday as part of a national campaign calling for stricter gun control laws.

Volunteers will gather at Fountain Square downtown and in Mason to collect signatures as part of the National Day to Demand Action to end gun violence.

Activists are calling for support on legislation requiring universal background checks for gun sales, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity gun magazines and for tougher penalties for gun trafficking offenses.

The national campaign is organized by Organizing for Action, a nonprofit group formed by former aides to President Barack Obama to support his legislative agenda, and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bi-partisan coalition of more than 900 mayors who support a number of gun control initiatives.

“We’re demanding action on gun violence,” said Beth Smith, volunteer leader of the Warren County chapter of Organizing for Action.

Locally, volunteers are hoping to gather enough support and signatures to pressure Ohio Sen. Rob Portman (R-Terrace Park) and Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Westwood) to support the legislation, said Smith.

Lawmakers are expected to take up the issue of gun control legislation soon after the Senate returns from its Easter and Passover recess April 8.

ORIGINAL POST

Republican Mitt Romney is expected in Lebanon Saturday for a rally. No details have been announced yet; stay tuned for details.

Hoping to capitalize on his performance in the first debate, Romney has practically been living in Ohio as he hopes to win the state considered the national prize in this election.

Aside from Thursday, the day of the vice presidential debate, Romney or running mate Paul Ryan are campaigning in Ohio every day this week.

Ryan began the week with a speech in Swanton.

Both President Barack Obama and Romney rallied supporters Tuesday in Ohio.

Romney continues his campaign today, in Mount Vernon, Delaware, and Sidney; Friday he and Ryan campaigned in Lancaster. Saturday Romney hits Portsmouth and Lebanon, while Ryan hits Bowling Green.

Lebanon – and in particular the porch of the Golden Lamb – have been popular campaign spots for Republicans in the past. It’s owned by the Portman family – the one that produced Sen. Rob Portman of Terrace Park.

As former political reporter Howard Wilkinson noted on places with presidential pasts:

The Golden Lamb: The grand-daddy of all Southwest Ohio presidential sites. Ohio’s oldest inn and restaurant, sitting on South Broadway in downtown Lebanon, has seen no fewer than 12 presidents walk through its doors over the past two centuries – John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. John McCain and Sarah Palin campaigned there in 2008.

Warren Co. Race Starts With a Bang

Posted by rrichardson September 20th, 2012, 10:45 am Post a Comment

Ron MaagRob Johnson reports:

Ready, Aim, Fire.

Ohio State Rep. Ron Maag is holding what he calls a “machine gun social”  Saturday at Lake Bailee Gun Club in Hamilton, Ohio.

Guests will have the opportunity to shoot fully automatic guns from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an additional cost to the $5 entry fee.

Maag, a Republican, currently represents Ohio’s 35th District, but due to recent redistricting he is seeking re-election in the 62nd District, which covers portions of Warren County.

More information on the social can be found at www.ronmaag.com.

Maag is running against Democrat Mike Kassalen, a former Little Miami School District teacher and long-time resident of Warren and Butler counties.

According to the candidates’ websites, neither one supports heightened gun control laws.  In the past, Maag has voted to loosen gun control and Kassalen’s website states he’s not an advocate for additional gun laws.

Maag was not immediately available for comment.
