P&G profits fall, but beat forecast

Posted by rrichardson April 27th, 2012, 9:48 am Post a Comment

David Holthaus reports:

Profits fell for Procter & Gamble in the January-March quarter, but the company still beat Wall Street’s expectations.

P&G Friday reported profits of $2.5 billion for the quarter, down 15 percent from the same quarter last year. That translates to earnings per share of 94 cents, beating the Street’s forecast of 93 cents.

Sales were $20.2 billion, up 2 percent from a year ago. Sales growth was driven partly by price increases across all its businesses, the company said. The sales figure fell short of Wall Street’s forecast of $20.3 billion.

Organic sales, a key internal sales measure that takes out the effect of acquisitions, divestitures and foreign currency shifts, grew 3 percent, in line with the company’s forecasts.

“We delivered broad-based organic sales growth, with all of our business segments growing in a difficult macroeconomic and competitive environment,” said chairman and CEO Bob McDonald. “We are making good progress against our productivity and cost saving programs and improving core operating profit growth as we continue to execute our innovation and portfolio expansion plans.”

Posted by rrichardson April 24th, 2012, 3:42 pm Post a Comment

The Enquirer

The Remke bigg’s store in Mason is closing, the result of underperforming sales and profits, the retailer announced Tuesday.

Final closing date will be in late May or early June. The other 13 Remke bigg’s stores in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky will continue doing business as usual.

“The decision to close our Mason location was a difficult one, and we recognize that it has a tremendous impact on both our associates and customers,” Remke bigg’s president Matthew Remke said. The store employs 66.

Starting today, customers with prescriptions at the Mason store should go to the Mason Target at 9841 Waterstone Blvd. The phone number there is (513) 677-3879.

This announcement was made this morning during an associate meeting at the Mason store. Current store associates will have the opportunity to meet with the human resources team to explore available positions in other Remke bigg’s Ohio and Kentucky store locations.

Those who are not able to make the transition to another store will receive outplacement support, and eligible associates will receive severance benefits.

Mason’s newest business is ready to rock.

School of Rock, a performance-based music school for people of all ages, will celebrate the grand opening of its first Cincinnati area location Saturday at 755 Reading Road in Mason.

The bash kicks off at 12:15 p.m. in typical rocker style with a ritual guitar smashing.  Live entertainment from students and local bands will perform throughout the day, with live broadcasting by WEBN.

Guests can participate in jam sessions with indie band Majestic Man and enter to win prizes, including a free week of summer camp.

The national music education company operates more than 80 schools in 26 states and Mexico.  The Mason opening marks the company’s third Ohio location — two other locations operate in the Cleveland area.

The youth-driven school inspired the 2003 movie, “School of Rock, about a wannabe rocker who poses as a substitute teacher and tries to turn his class into rock stars.

Franchise owner Tim Garry recently moved back to Cincinnati after a long career in New York as an investment manager.  He was sold on the School of Rock concept after his two sons, Jamie and Matthew, went through the program at a New Jersey school.

“It was great to see them having a blast, and gratifying to watch them develop as musicians,” said Garry, of Pleasant Ridge.  “In fact, my eldest moved on to the Berklee College of Music, which would have never happened without his School of Rock experience.”

School of Rock sets itself apart from more traditional music schools by giving students the chance to perform on stage in front of live audiences, says Garry.

“A lot of kids will not thrive in private lessons because they find it boring,” Garry explained.  ”Here, we believe the best way to learn music is to play music.  It becomes much more engaging for (students) and they’re more likely to stick with it.”

“It’s essentially team sports for the arts,” he added.

Beginning students start with Rock 101, which teaches students principal instruments, including guitar, drums, bass, keyboard and vocals.

Intermediate to advanced students move on to the Performance Program, where they learn harmonies and musicianship during weekly private lessons and group sessions in preparation for a live performance.

Monthly membership cost is $275 for both programs.  Adult programs are also offered.

The newly-renovated 5,000 square-foot facility boasts seven lesson rooms, two band rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and the Sonic Boom Room, a 1,600 square-foot performance space with professional stage, sound and lighting equipment.

Garry says he plans to open additional locations in Cincinnati in the next five years.

“Cincinnati has a tremendously strong music heritage, one that I think that’s underrated,” he said.  “I expect us to become a major cultural institution within Cincinnati.”

AAA: Ohio gas prices dip by 6 cents

Posted by rrichardson April 9th, 2012, 11:45 am Post a Comment

The Enquirer

Average gasoline prices in Ohio have dipped by 6 cents per gallon over the past week following an 8-cent dip a week earlier.

The rate in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express is about $3.77 per gallon. Last Monday’s average was $3.83.

Ohio drivers were paying about $3.79 this time last year.

The drop comes as the price of crude oil has fallen since last month amid signs of weak consumer demand in the U.S. Crude inventories have jumped more than expected the last two weeks, and the U.S. government said Friday that the economy added 120,000 jobs in March, fewer than analysts expected.

Average nationwide gasoline prices have remained steady over the past week at $3.93 per gallon.

Ohio tops in job gains

Posted by rrichardson March 31st, 2012, 8:28 pm Post a Comment

Paul E. Kostyu reports:

Ohio led the nation in adding 28,300 jobs in February, beating out Texas and New York, according to figures released Friday by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Service-providing industries, which include trade, transportation and utilities, as well as government jobs, led Ohio’s gain with 21,300 jobs, according to data released last week by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Construction and manufacturing also were among the industries that saw gains last month.

“Wow,” said George Vredeveld, an economics professor at the University of Cincinnati, when told of Friday’s federal report.

Vredeveld said his first instinct is that Ohio’s manufacturing base “has had a pretty good heartbeat for the past nine to 10 months.” And if the numbers indicate a revival of manufacturing, “then that’s good because Ohio is obviously heavy in manufacturing.”

Manufacturing has gained 18,600 jobs since February 2011. Ohio’s unemployment rate was 7.6 percent in February, down from 7.7 percent in January.

“That’s very good news,” Rob Nichols, spokesman for Gov. John R. Kasich, said Friday. “But we have so much work to be done. We were in a very deep hole.”

Nichols said improved employment should strengthen Kasich’s hand in dealing with the Ohio Legislature. Lawmakers have been hesitant to go along with the governor’s plan to lower state income taxes while increasing taxes on energy companies tapping oil and natural gas reserves in shale deposits in the eastern half of the state.

“Over the previous decade, Ohio lost 600,000 jobs and in the last 14 months we’ve added 83,000,” Nichols said. “We have to reduce the tax burden on Ohioans.”

Ohio has led job growth in the Midwest and has been in the top five states nationally for a couple months, something Kasich points out on a regular basis.

But Vredeveld cautioned that “one or two months do not a trend make, so let’s be careful. We can be hopeful.”

Nichols said he doesn’t mind giving some credit to the national economic policies of President Barack Obama for Ohio’s job growth.

“We don’t care who gets the credit,” he said. “This is not about politics. It’s about getting Ohio back on track.”

Vredeveld said 75 to 85 percent of changes in state and local economies are influenced by national economic policy, but he said “what we’re doing in Ohio” has an impact.

“I wouldn’t discount the impact of state policy on job growth,” he said.

The Labor Department said unemployment declined in 29 states and rose in eight. Unemployment was unchanged in 13 states and Washington, D.C. Job growth was broader in January when unemployment rates declined in 45 states.

Ohio’s job numbers come on the heels of Moody’s recent upgrade of the state’s credit rating from “negative watch” to “stable.”

Nichols said it was the first time since 2007 that Ohio has had a stable credit rating from all three major rating agencies – Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch.

Nationwide, employers added 227,000 net non-farm jobs in February, just under the average of 245,000 jobs per month since December.

That has helped lower the national unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years. The economy is expanding modestly, but economists expect the stronger job market will help lift growth later this year. The data released Friday may suggest that is already happening.

The Associated Press contributed.
