Alyssa CousineauThe Enquirer

From the first time Mason High School senior Alyssa Cousineau stepped foot on a stage at age nine, she’s been hooked on theater.

“No matter how experienced you are, I don’t think that feeling ever goes away,” she said.

She plans to study acting in college, with the ultimate goal of performing on the stage in New York.

She’s taking the first steps by starting her own business, Once Upon a Birthday, where she appears as a princess for birthday parties. She is also a prep tap dancer at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music.

“I will stop at nothing to make this dream a success,” Cousineau says. “Failure is not an option.”

How did you get involved in acting?
My first real show was when I was nine years old and I played an orphan in Annie at the Children’s Theatre of Mason. My dance instructor encouraged me to prepare a song and a monologue and audition. I had no idea what I was doing. I was called back and later cast all on my very first audition. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked.

What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you that involves theater?
It was when I was awarded a Cappie Award for Best Featured Actress for my role as Maria in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

How has theater played a role in your life?
Theater hasn’t changed my life, it is my life. Since I was little I have ate, slept, and breathed performing.

Ted LiuThe Enquirer

Ted Liu is a violinist who has also made time to run. The Mason High School senior juggles his time between playing in the school’s Honor Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Youth Symphony Orchestra, and running varsity track and field.

He also was selected for the Ohio Music Education Association’s District Orchestra, the Southwest Regional Orchestra, and All State Orchestra.

Liu is also active in the Cincinnati Chinese Church’s youth group where he plays acoustic guitar when leading worship services, and does volunteer work through the school’s National Honor Society. He plans to study engineering in college and says he will continue to play for fun and to relieve stress.

How did you get involved in music?
My older cousin – who I absolutely adored – picked up the violin first so it was only natural for me to play the same instrument. Then my parents continued to encourage me.

What is the most exciting thing that’s happened to you in orchestra?
Last winter I had the opportunity to play the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra after winning third at the concert competition. It’s every musician’s dream to perform with an actual orchestra after years of hard work.

Explain how playing the violin has changed your life?
Playing and instrument has opened an expressive side of me that could only have been discovered with music and experimentation with the arts.
