Wei Sun with Ohio Secretary of State Jon HustedMason High School senior Wei Sun got a birds-eye view of state government at work last week.

Sun, who was “elected” Secretary of State at Buckeye Girls State this summer, had the chance to meet Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted at his offices in Columbus.

Buckeye Girls State is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary held for one week each summer to teach high school young women about local and state government.

Sun’s counterpart in the Buckeye Boys State program, Octavious Singleton of Streetsboro, was also invited to meet Husted.

“Both of these programs give young people practical experiences that will stick with them as they become active participants in our democracy,” said Husted. “The lessons they learn at Buckeye Boys and Girls State set them up for success as Ohio’s future leaders.”
