Electronics manufacturer celebrates move to Deerfield

Posted by rrichardson May 7th, 2013, 3:27 pm Post a Comment

One of Deerfield Township’s largest vacant industrial facilities has new tenants.

On Friday, EPIC Technologies celebrated the grand opening of its new location at 4240 Irwin Simpson Road in the Governor’s Pointe office park.

Company officials say the 74,000 square foot building, formerly occupied by L-3 Nova Engineering, is both larger and more energy-efficient than the business’ previous 56,000 square foot plant in Lebanon.

“The other site was really dragging us and our business down and didn’t show well. This facility is 30 years newer and much more economical,” said John Smith, plant manager.

Filling such a large space won’t be a challenge for the specialty electronics manufacturer, said Smith. The company has 130 employees in Deerfield and hopes to add more positions in the future, he said.

“Our performance has allowed us to move and expand,” said Smith. ” Our customers continue to expand and we have leads on new customers.”

Company officials settled on the Deerfield Township location for its close proximity to “business-friendly” restaurants, hotels and shops, said CEO Bhawnesh Mathur.

“It’s amazing what an eight-mile distance makes. This area is much more vibrant and employees like it better,” he said.

The company’s move comes as an economic boon to Deerfield Township, said Chris Romano, president of Deerfield’s board of trustees.

“When one of the largest buildings in town goes vacant, it makes your heart flutter,” he said. “When somebody finally comes and backfills, it lets you breathe again and know that, at least locally, the economy is starting to churn again.”

EPIC’s ownership includes Chicago-based CIVC Partners. The company, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has manufacturing plants in Norwalk, Ohio and Juarez, Mexico.

Kroger pilot program could transform shopping experience

Alexander Coolidge reports:

Looking to shorten the wait at the checkout, Kroger Co. is tinkering with technology that allows customers to scan grocery items themselves as they take them off the shelf.

Called “Scan, Bag, Go,” it provides interested shoppers hand-held scanners and bags as they walk in the door. Customers scan and bag items as they navigate the store, then scan a bar code at the front of the store that transfers their order to the checkout.

Kroger officials are tight-lipped about their plans for the technology, but experts say it has the potential to transform shoppers’ experience – saving customers time and potentially saving the company millions. Kroger has quietly expanded the pilot program in recent months.

“I like to do it myself – it’s extremely easy,” said Denise Siereveld, 45, of Bridgetown. She was buying flowers, onions and soda pop at the Dent store Tuesday. “I want to get in and out. I don’t want to wait in line.”

Customers like that the devices keep a running total of their grocery bill as they shop, Kroger officials say. Some shoppers even let young children hold the devices – called Personal Assistant and Liaisons or PALs – to keep them occupied.

“It helps get customers through the store faster and allows them to bag groceries the way they want,” said Andy Lowell, the research and development manager for Kroger’s Cincinnati-Dayton division. “But we’re still getting feedback to make it better.”

Analysts say Kroger and other supermarket chains are striving to get customers in and out. If companies move traffic more quickly, they make room for more potential customers.

“It’s a win-win – the customer wants the speed,” said Joseph Feldman, an analyst with Telsey Advisory Group. “The No. 1 complaint by customers in retail is the wait at the register.”

Feldman noted even customers who don’t use the devices might benefit because the wait in traditional lines would be lessened by those who do. He added supermarkets would also save money because some workers checking out customers and bagging groceries would be freed up to do other work.

Cincinnati’s first cupcakery company just got another sweet deal – selling its confections in private suites and grab ’n’ go markets at Great American Ball Park.

Delaware North Sportsservice, the exclusive concessions, premium dining and retail provider for the ballpark, has contracted with SugarPlums CupCakery to add the tasty treats to its usual offering of hot dogs, popcorn and Cracker Jack.

“It gives people more choices,” Delaware North spokesman Glen White says. “People like decorated cupcakes, anything that celebrates the team. It was really an awesome thing for us.”

SugarPlums was selected both for its high-quality cakes and its custom decorations, White says. Four flavors are offered to Reds fans: Mr. Mustache Red Velvet, The Buckeye (peanut butter chocolate), The Cincinnatian (salted caramel) and White Chocolate Raspberry BerriLicious. Two cupcakes sell for $10.

The ballpark gig is the latest success for SugarPlums owner Patty Hannika, who figures she bakes more than 90,000 cupcakes a year in her growing Mason business.

Once found mostly at children’s birthday parties and school bake sales, cupcakes are enjoying a resurgence. Bakers now have weekly showdowns on the Food Network cable TV show “Cupcake Wars,” while shows like TLC’s “DC Cupcakes” and “Cake Boss” follow the travails of cake-bakers.

AssureRx test technology receives patent

Posted by rrichardson April 16th, 2013, 4:05 pm Post a Comment

The Mayo Clinic has secured a U.S. patent for technology exclusively licensed to Mason-based AssureRx Health, Inc.

The Rochester, Minn. based company announced Tuesday it has received a patent for “Methods for Selecting Medications.” AssureRx is the exclusive worldwide licensee of the technology, which it used to develop pharmacogenomic tests under the brand GeneSight.

The genetic test helps doctors tailor treatment for depression and other psychiatric disorders with a simple cheek swab that analyzes variations in three genes that influence how a person might metabolize certain medications.

“Mayo Clinic technology provided the foundation for AssureRx Health to bring novel, actionable and clinically-validated treatment decision support products into clinical use for patients with neuropsychiatric disorders,” AssureRx Health President and CEO James S. Burns said in a press release.

The company’s technology was initially developed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, which, along with the Mayo Clinic, is an equity holder in AssureRx Health.

Procter & Gamble boosts dividend 7 pct

Posted by rrichardson April 15th, 2013, 11:33 am Post a Comment

Alexander Coolidge reports:

Procter & Gamble announced this morning it is boosting its dividend to 60.15 cents per common share, up from 56.2 cents, an increase of 7 percent.

The dividend is payable on or after May 15 for shareholders of record on April 26.

The announcement marks the company’s 57th straight year P&G has upped the payouts to stockholders. The company has paid a dividend since its 1890 incorporation – 123 years.

P&G shares ticked up 49 cents to $80.57 cents in early morning trading. The stock has been climbing to new highs this spring as its turnaround plan has gained traction.

The maker of Tide detergent and Crest toothpaste is in the midst of a $10 billion cost-cutting campaign that has cut 5,800 non-manufacturing jobs in the last year. Profit margins and earnings have improved in the last two recent quarters.

Last week, shares topped $80 for the first time since the consumer product giant’s 2004 stock-split. Adjusted for splits, the stock is trading near all-time highs. The stock is up 18 percent so far in 2013.

Shares are up 35 percent from the 52-week-low P&G hit last June amid disappointing earnings results.

P&G stock hits $80, new high

Posted by rrichardson April 11th, 2013, 3:00 pm Post a Comment

Alexander Coolidge reports:

Procter & Gamble’s stock hit $80 a share today – a new all-time high.

The milestone comes as the broader market is rallying and P&G has seen traction from its turnaround plan. Stock for the maker of Tide detergent and Crest toothpaste is up 18 percent so far in 2013.

Shares are up 35 percent from the 52-week-low P&G hit last June amid disappointing earnings results.

The consumer products giant is slated to report its third quarter earnings later this month. Wall Street analysts believe it will report a $2.7 billion profit, which would be up 10 percent from the same period a year ago.

P&G stock has rallied after two solid quarters of earnings growth as the company’s cost-cutting measures have improved profit margins. The company has cut more than 5,800 non-manufacturing jobs since announcing a restructuring plan in February 2012.

Pet-friendly policies in the workplace boost productivity, morale

Sleeping on the job usually isn’t acceptable.

Nor is drooling, scratching and licking your way through the workday.

But in a handful of businesses across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, it’s all in a day’s work for pets who accompany their owners to work.

About 17 percent of U.S. companies allow workers to bring pets – mostly dogs – to work, according to a 2008 report from the American Pet Products Association. In 2011, the group reported that nationally, about 1.4 million people take 2.3 million dogs to work each day.

Among the region’s most pet-friendly companies is Procter & Gamble, which allows the 360 employees in its pet care division to bring their four-legged companions to the office. P&G Pet Care, based at the company’s Mason Business Center, produces Iams, Eukanuba and Natura Pet Food products. The company’s pet-friendly policy has been in place since P&G acquired Iams in 1999, said Julie Franklin, Iams’ external relations director.

The office, which includes an on-site dog park, dog-friendly conference rooms and separate elevator for pet-owners, even has its own vice president of canine communications, a 11/2-year-old Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen named Pawl Griffin.

Kristin Malone, who works in regulatory affairs, often brings Dodge, a 3-year-old Australian shepherd. Having pets around is an easy way for businesses to foster a stress-free atmosphere, she says.

“When I have a really frustrating day I look down at him and it reminds me of why I’m here,” she said. “It’s just like magic. You pet them and the stress goes away.”
