A total of five Mason High School softball players were recently selected to the Greater Miami Conference first and second teams. Four seniors from the 2012 team were first-team selections.

Those Mason seniors included Sarah Browning, Margo Hutchison, Jillian Richardson and Claire Wehby.

Browning, who recently committed to play softball at Muskingum, posted a 14-9 win-loss record in 2012, struck out 130 batters in 143.2 innings and had an earned run average of 1.61.

Hutchison led the GMC and broke a school record when she hit 10 home runs in 2012. She also led her team with 41 runs batted in and with a .430 on-base percentage.

Richardson led Mason in at-bats (102), runs (25), hits (39), doubles (8), triples (2) and in batting average (.375).

Wehby led Mason with 83 assists and had a fielding percentage of .953.

In addition, junior Sami Parave was selected to the all-GMC second team.

As a team, Mason finished with an 18-9 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference play (finished fourth in the GMC standings). The Comets also won a district title before losing in the regional semifinal to Lebanon during the postseason.

But while there’s a good chance these two schools will play major roles in this season’s tournament, other teams, including Mason, will offer up competition.

Enquirer contributor Mark Schmetzer offers this preview of Div. I softball teams.  Here’s what he says about the Lady Comets:

Mason also will be counting on seniors, according to coach Liann Muff. Pitcher Sarah Browning was named first-team all-GMC last season while catcher Margo Hutchinson, shortstop Jill Richardson and third baseman Claire Wehby were second-team picks.
