Warm-up coming but chance of snow in forecast for Opening Day

Posted by rrichardson March 28th, 2013, 7:49 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

We are finally going to enjoy some spring-like weather as the Easter weekend begins.

Today will be mostly sunny with a high of 48 degrees. That’s still a good 10 degrees below our normal temperature this time of year, but after weeks of below-normal figures and snow, it’s a welcome change.

We’re off to a frigid start this morning with 27 degrees being registered at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Overnight lows will remain in the 20s and 30s through early next week, but our daytime highs will push into the upper 50s Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Expect mostly sun Friday and Saturday. In fact, Saturday will be the best day of the week with a high near 60.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm will develop after 2 a.m. Easter Sunday and continue throughout the holiday. There’s 80 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms until 5 p.m. The high will reach 57.

Uh-oh, forecast revised; 2-4 inches of snow to fall

Posted by rrichardson February 1st, 2013, 4:21 pm Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker and Janice Morse reports:

A weather advisory is now calling for 2 to 4 inches of snow to blanket the region by Sunday morning, a bit more than predicted earlier, the National Weather Service says.

An earlier forecast had predicted a total of 1 inch to 3 inches. But an updated advisory, issued just after 3 p.m. today, calls for an extra inch or so, on top of the snow that fell Thursday night, creating an icy, slippery mess on roadways.

Frigid, colder-than-normal temperatures are still being predicted. The high later today will only creep to 14 with a wind chill of -5. That is well below the normal high of 49 degrees for this time of year, thanks to a blast of Canadian air coupled with strong winds from the west.

On Saturday, snow is expected to begin spreading into eastern Indiana and western Ohio before daybreak Saturday, then continuing across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky during the morning.

“Steady snow will continue through the day with much of the accumulation occurring during that time,” the advisory says, which is in effect for the region from 4 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday. Flurries are expected to continue “on and off into Saturday night,” the advisory said, dropping about one more inch of snow.

The weather service reminds motorists that a winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. “Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving,” the advisory says.

Below zero wind chill tonight, Tuesday

Posted by rrichardson January 21st, 2013, 8:58 am Post a Comment

Brenna R. Kelly reports:

It’s cold – so cold that the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for part of the region.

The high today is expected to reach only the mid 20s, but that temperature along with winds of 15 to 20 mph will make it feel much colder.

The Weather Service’s wind chill advisory covers most of Ohio including Butler, Warren and Clinton counties in the Greater Cincinnati area. Wind chill readings in those areas could be 15 below zero tonight, the Weather Service warned, adding that prolonged exposure could cause frostbite. The advisory is in effect from 8 tonight until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The Weather Service’s hazardous weather outlook for the rest of the Greater Cincinnati area warns that the wind chill could reach 5 below zero tonight. The low temperature will be between 5 and 10 degrees, but the below zero feeling will last well into Tuesday morning.

In addition to the bitter cold, the Weather Service warns that a low pressure system will move across the area Thursday into Friday, bringing with it the chance for snow and ice.

“The latest indications are that there is the potential for wintry precipitation to occur with accumulations,” the Weather Service’s outlook states.

After warm stretch, winter returns

Posted by rrichardson January 14th, 2013, 8:44 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

You will notice a big difference in the temperature this morning.  Brr!

Yes, winter has returned as the mercury plunged more than 40 degrees in the last 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Cold air pushed into Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overnight from the northern plains and Canada, said meteorologist Andy Latto.

Sunday’s high temperature of 66 degrees tied the record for warmest weather on that date, set in 1995.

But for now, record highs are a thing of the past.

It’s 25 degrees at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. With the wind chill factored in, it feels around 16.

Today’s high will only make it to 34 under a mix of sun and clouds. The overnight low will be 23 with a wind chill of 15.

Our high temperature today is actually lower than normal for this point in January. Typically, the high reaches 38 degrees, Latto noted.

“We are not that far from normal,” he said. “It just seems colder because it’s been so warm.”

The rest of the week will remain dry but cold with highs in the 30s and low 40s. Nightly lows will slip into the 20s.

Saturday looks to be the best one over the next several days. It will be sunny with a high of 48.

Cold front bringing wind, snow to area

Posted by rrichardson December 20th, 2012, 8:18 am Post a Comment

Brenna R. Kelly reports:

It will be a blustery day across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the entire region and a winter weather advisory for Butler, Warren and Clinton counties in Ohio.

Winds will increase during the day Thursday as a strong low pressure system moves the area, according to the Weather Service. Sustained winds are expected to be between 25 and 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

The Weather Service warns that the winds could cause scattered tree and power line damage this afternoon. The high winds could also make driving difficult. The wind advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Friday.

The cold front is expected to move through the area late Thursday afternoon. That will bring snow to the region’s northern counties. A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Friday. There could be up to two inches of snow in Butler, Warren and Clinton counties.

Temperatures are expected to fall quickly from tonight from the 40s to the 20s, that could result in slick spots on the roads, the Weather Service said.

Colder weather, snow coming this week

Posted by rrichardson December 18th, 2012, 8:53 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Colder weather and a bit of snow is coming to Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

High temperatures will hover in the 40s today and push into the 50s Wednesday and Thursday before a strong cold front comes in from the west, driving the mercury down dramatically, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

A slight chance of rain and snow showers could develop before 9 p.m. Thursday night. Just a scant amount of snow – less than a tenth of an inch – is possible, said meteorologist Steve Rhebenach.

It will be cloudy with a low of 26.

Friday will be mostly sunny but cold with the high temperature only reaching 32 – nearly 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, Rhebenach said.

The overnight low will plunge into the low 20s.

This weekend will remain sunny, but it will be brisk with temperatures struggling to reach the upper 30s and overnight lows remaining in the 20s.

It should be dry early next week through Christmas Day.

A cold front is moving into Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, bringing falling temperatures and possibly snow flurries.

It’s 49 degrees this morning at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. By noon, the mercury will slip to 45 and then to 39 with wind chills in the 20s by 5 p.m. It should be mostly cloudy with spotty showers before 2 p.m.

There’s a slight, 20 percent chance for snow flurries before 7 p.m. and then again after 9 p.m.

No accumulation is expected.

The overnight low will plunge to 29 degrees.

Wintry mix of rain/snow in the forecast

Posted by rrichardson November 26th, 2012, 8:13 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

The work week is getting off to a quiet start weather-wise, but there is a bit of snow in the forecast.

Today should be sunny with a high temperature of 49 degrees, which is exactly where we should be for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It will be brisk this morning with a low of 32 degrees by 8 a.m., so definitely bundle up the kids as they head out to the bus stop.

Tonight, a low pressure system moving across Kentucky and Tennessee will bring a slight wintry mix of precipitation to Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Rain will begin falling after dark and, as the overnight low temperature falls, that will turn into snow after midnight, said meteorologist Andy Hatzos.

Less than a half inch of snow is expected to accumulate by the time it stops by 7 a.m. Tuesday, he said.

Cold temperatures on the way

Posted by rrichardson November 12th, 2012, 8:54 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A strong cold front is blowing in from the west today, bringing storms, high winds and plunging temperatures.

It was 61 degrees early this morning at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, but the mercury will shift into a free fall by lunchtime as we slip into the mid-40s.

By 5 p.m., it will only be 38 degrees – a good 30 degrees colder than the high temperature of 68 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

There’s a 100 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms before 3 p.m. with winds gusting 30 to 40 mph across the region.

Hazardous weather is not expected, said meteorologist Ashley Novak.

Overnight, the winds will calm to about 15 mph, but it will be cold with a low of 27.

The sun will return Tuesday and stick around the rest of the week. But it will remain brisk with daytime highs in the of mid-40s through Wednesday, a good 10 degrees colder than normal for this time of year, Novak noted.

Overnight lows will be in the 20s.

By Thursday, the mercury will climb back into the low 50s. But overnight lows will remain frigid and struggling to break the 30-degree mark.
