Sixteen members of Mason High School’s American Sign Language club signed the National Anthem at the school’s fall pep rally and homecoming game on Friday.
Signing the National Anthem promotes deaf awareness and emphasizes cultural diversity, a primary focus of the club, say club members.
“Someone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing may not be able to sing or hear the National Anthem but being able to sign it allows them to feel a part of the community and nation they live in,” said member Taylor Groeschen.
Mason High School offers American Sign Language classes, in addition to French, German, Spanish and Mandarin.
