Mason’s girl’s softball suffered a 3-1 defeat to Lakota West, the No. 4 team in the Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll, on Wednesday.
The fifth-ranked Comets team have lost three of their past four games. A win over Sycamore was sandwiched between losses to No. 1 Fairfield and No. 2 Lakota East.
That kind of schedule leaves little room for error, which Mason learned against Lakota West, reports Enquirer contributor Mark Schmetzer.
Junior Claire Wehby singled to left field with one out, and classmate Jillian Richardson followed by driving the ball over the head of freshman left fielder Alyssa Hedric for a run-scoring double.
Mason (7-4, 4-3) didn’t get another runner past first base.
“We went flat,” first-year coach Liann Muff said. “We’re a young team. It’s a learning situation. They think we’re going to hold them until the end of the game. You’ve got to keep your intensity.”
Schmetzer has more of the game’s highlights:
Lakota West got a runner to second base in three of the first four innings before breaking through in the fifth. Senior Yasmin Battle led off with a walk and moved to third when Mason junior catcher Margo Hutchison’s attempted pickoff throw went down the right-field line.
“Walks hurt us, and that’s not what we wanted (Hutchison) to do,” Muff said. “It’s great that she’s aggressive, but not in that situation.”
Freshman Kat Burbrink was hit by a pitch, and Hedric tied the score with a single to left. Senior Melanie Bryan loaded the bases with an infield single, junior Jess Burke singled to drive in the go-ahead run, and junior Amanda Lahti added a sacrifice fly.
“That’s a big win for us,” said Lakota West coach Keith Castner. “We were fundamentally sound, we got the hits when we needed them, and we did the little things.”
