Despite losses, Mason team to beat in girls’ cross country

Posted by rrichardson August 21st, 2012, 8:51 am Post a Comment

Kevin Goheen reports:

The Mason girls have been the area’s dominant program in cross country for most of the past decade. The Comets have run in eight straight Division I state meets, including finishing third last season and missing the program’s first team title by just five points.

Mason may not have as formidable of a team on paper this season after losing Monica Lake and Bridget McElhenny to graduation, but don’t try telling area coaches the Comets aren’t the standard bearer entering this season.

“Mason is still the team in Cincinnati,” said Sycamore coach Steve Nester.

Led by seniors Lauren Wood and Tori Martin, the Comets lead what should be a competitive and deep pack of area teams seeking to knock them from their perch.

The state meet will be run at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, east of Columbus, on Nov. 3. The top four teams at the regional meet qualify to state.

Sycamore has missed a berth to the state meet by one spot each of the last two seasons, but the Aviators return six of their top seven runners, including front-runners senior Sam Siler and sophomore Rosie Menyhert. Siler and Menyhert were state finalists in the 3,200 meters on the track this past spring – Siler placed seventh and Menyhert ninth – as well as individual qualifiers to the state cross country meet last fall, where Siler placed 14th.

Lebanon junior Jacquelyn Crow (eighth) and Colerain senior Kristin Seiler (12th) are the area’s top returning finishers from last year’s state meet. Lakota East sophomore Abby VanFossen and senior Kelly Burrows as well as Mercy senior Emma Hatch also return after qualifying to the state meet as individuals last year. Milford sophomore AnneE Dalziel missed a state berth by one place last year.

Ursuline returns five of its top seven runners, led by junior Christine Fredrick and sophomore Grace Kelly. The Lions will seek redemption after a regional meet berth was stripped away because of a disqualification at the district meet when the team failed to check in properly at the starting line.

“Sycamore, Ursuline and Mason should be the front three going into the season,” said McAuley coach Ron Russo. “Sycamore has the best duo in the state upfront, and Ursuline’s top two should be really tough as well.”

Russo believes his team could be a surprise by the time the postseason arrives. Sophomore McKenzie Pfeifer and junior Kate Olding return from last year’s team, which placed eighth at the regional meet.

St. Ursula, Colerain, Oak Hills, Mercy, Lakota West and Lebanon were all regional qualifying teams last year. All of them have at least three of their top seven runners returning from that regional race.

The Troy Division I regional is arguably the toughest of any of the state’s four state meet qualifiers.

In Division II, Indian Hill and Wyoming should still be the top two teams, despite the graduations of two of the state’s top runners in Indian Hill’s Elizabeth Heinbach and Wyoming’s Emily Stites.

Indian Hill coach Sue Savage said junior Elena Horton, who placed 19th at state meet after qualifying as an individual, and freshman sister Rhian give her team a good foundation in its attempt to improve upon a fifth-place finish at the regional meet.

Wyoming returns five of its seven runners from a team that placed ninth at the regional meet. Seniors Sammy Schwartz and Amelia Irvine top that group for coach Travis Glendenning.

Mariemont has its entire team back after last year’s seventh place finish at the Division III regional meet, led by sophomore state qualifier Juliana Overbey. Summit Country Day was ninth at the regional meet and returns five of its runners, led by junior Kylie VonHandorf.

Georgetown junior Kylie Watson returns after placing 47th at state.

Mason Schools Science Fair goes high-tech

Posted by rrichardson February 3rd, 2012, 5:51 pm Post a Comment

School science fairs have come a long way from Mr. Wizard.

Gone are the days of hamster mazes and solar system models crafted from styrofoam.  At the Mason Schools Science Fair on Thursday, students entered projects on solar and thermodynamic energy, desalinization systems for developing nations and artificial intelligence.

“It’s the biggest one yet and it keeps growing every year,” said Mason Middle School teacher and fair co-coordinator Mark Sullivan of the 122 projects entered in this year’s competition.   “This isn’t for a grade; it’s for the love of science.  The kids treat it very seriously.”

Amy Huang

Forty-nine students received a superior ranking Thursday, making them eligible to advance to the regional Southwest Ohio Science and Engineering Expo at the University of Cincinnati on March 10.

From there it’s on to the Ohio Academy of Science State Science Day, which saw 17 Mason students compete last year.

It was the first year of entering for seventh-grader Austin Vetter, who designed, coded and built a robot to navigate through a maze.  Austin, who programs in several different computer languages and runs his own computer server at home, remained modest about his project, which earned him a superior ranking and accolades from judges.

“I just wanted to show what I could do,” he said with a shrug.

Seventh-grader Amy Huang stayed up late every night for a week to evaluate her project on generating electricity with dye-sensitized solar cells.  She tested the effectiveness of natural versus synthetic dyes to see which conducted the most electricity.

“I like science because there’s a lot of things you can do hands-on,” she said.

Manasa Pradhan, also in the seventh grade, constructed a solar-powered air conditioner that uses a high- to low-pressure system to generate cooled air.

“I just love science,” she said.  “I saw a lot of great projects; there was a lot of competition this year.”

Amy and Manasa were among a high number of girls who entered this year’s fair, a welcome sight for teachers who try to spark girls’ interest in the STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — fields.

“Traditional science settings are male-dominated, but not here,” said Sullivan.

Critical thinking skills and an emphasis on environmental concerns were evident throughout the annual science fair, but so too were creativity and fun.

Gabe Menelik

Gabe Menelik presents his project on the strength of skyscrapers to judges at the Mason Schools Science Fair on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012. The Enquirer/Rachel Richardson

Eighth-grade twin sisters Sophia and Ellie Privitera froze earthworms and reanimated them to see if they could survive (they did).  The twins titled their project “Cryowormics,” but jokingly nicknamed it “zombie worms.”

“We didn’t think it would be so gross,” said Ellie with a giggle.

Middle-schoolers Destyni Dulin and Jordyn Burke took one cosmetic manufacturer to task with their claims of fuller, plumper eyelashes.

“We wanted to find the one that would pop out your eyelashes more,” said Jordyn.

The pair evaluated five different mascaras to determine which brand produced longer lashes — use Covergirl Lashblast Fusion, they recommend.

While Mason students have traditionally fared well in math and science, Sullivan says shows like “Mythbusters” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” have made science cool again.

The fair has become so popular in recent years that organizers may need to seek out a larger venue than the Mason Middle School Commons to hold it in, he said.

“That’s a great problem to have,” he said with a laugh.

The Aubrey Rose Foundation will hold auditions for its American Girl Fashion Show beginning this weekend through the end of January.

The event, which involves seven separate shows April 27-29 at Music Hall, features local girls modeling American Girl fashions.

Mason girls’ cross country finishes third at state meet

Posted by rrichardson November 7th, 2011, 1:01 pm Post a Comment
Monica Lake

Monica Lake

Mason girls’ cross country lost their bid for a Division I state title Saturday at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

Mason senior Monica Lake, the school’s top runner, placed sixth (18:18.37) to help the Comets finish third with 118 points.

Brunswick won the title with 113 and Beavercreek also had 118 but finished ahead of Mason because it had a better sixth-place finisher. Springboro was fourth with 150 points.

“I was 12th last year, so it feels really great to (get sixth),” said Lake, who won the district title two weeks ago and was third at the regional. “I was able to be with the front pack for a while before they broke out a little. I’m still happy with my finish.”

Mason was the only area team to qualify for the state meet in any of the three divisions, but 14 other runners, including regional champions Claudia Saunders (Division I) of Princeton and Emily Stites (Division II) of Wyoming, as well as runners-up Jacquelyn Crow of Lebanon and Elizabeth Heinbach of Indian Hill, also competed.

Saturday marked Mason’s eighth consecutive trip to the state meet.  The Comets have placed in the top nine every year. Their second-place finish last year behind three-time defending champion Rocky River Magnificat was their best showing.

Members of the Mason coss country team: Tori Martin, junior, left, Monica Lake, senior, and Mackenzie Jensen, senior.

The Mason girls’ cross country team will try to end a regional dry streak at a Division I state title as they go for the win Saturday at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

The Comets are ranked No. 1 in the state coaches’ poll and have run up to that billing the last three weekends in winning the Greater Miami Conference, district and regional championships.

Enquirer contributor Kevin Goheen has more details about their bid:

Mason is the only area team to qualify for the state meet in any of the three divisions, but 14 other runners, including regional champions Claudia Saunders (Division I) of Princeton and Emily Stites (Division II) of Wyoming, as well as runners-up Jacquelyn Crow of Lebanon and Elizabeth Heinbach of Indian Hill, will be in the field.

The state meet begins with the girls’ Division III race at 11 a.m. The state meet has moved to Hebron this year after 25 years at Scioto Downs in Columbus.

Mason is making its eighth consecutive trip to the state meet. The Comets have placed in the top nine every year, but are seeking the program’s first state title. Their second-place finish last year behind three-time defending champion Rocky River Magnificat was their best showing.
