Electronics manufacturer celebrates move to Deerfield

One of Deerfield Township’s largest vacant industrial facilities has new tenants.

On Friday, EPIC Technologies celebrated the grand opening of its new location at 4240 Irwin Simpson Road in the Governor’s Pointe office park.

Company officials say the 74,000 square foot building, formerly occupied by L-3 Nova Engineering, is both larger and more energy-efficient than the business’ previous 56,000 square foot plant in Lebanon.

“The other site was really dragging us and our business down and didn’t show well. This facility is 30 years newer and much more economical,” said John Smith, plant manager.

Filling such a large space won’t be a challenge for the specialty electronics manufacturer, said Smith. The company has 130 employees in Deerfield and hopes to add more positions in the future, he said.

“Our performance has allowed us to move and expand,” said Smith. ” Our customers continue to expand and we have leads on new customers.”

Company officials settled on the Deerfield Township location for its close proximity to “business-friendly” restaurants, hotels and shops, said CEO Bhawnesh Mathur.

“It’s amazing what an eight-mile distance makes. This area is much more vibrant and employees like it better,” he said.

The company’s move comes as an economic boon to Deerfield Township, said Chris Romano, president of Deerfield’s board of trustees.

“When one of the largest buildings in town goes vacant, it makes your heart flutter,” he said. “When somebody finally comes and backfills, it lets you breathe again and know that, at least locally, the economy is starting to churn again.”

EPIC’s ownership includes Chicago-based CIVC Partners. The company, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has manufacturing plants in Norwalk, Ohio and Juarez, Mexico.

Intelligrated expansion to bring high-tech jobs to area

Posted by rrichardson January 9th, 2013, 3:48 pm Post a Comment

Intelligrated, Inc. celebrated the opening of a new $10 million office expansion in Mason Wednesday that is expected to bring hundreds of high-tech jobs to the area.

The expansion, which nearly doubles the space of Intelligrated’s headquarters just off I-71 on Innovation Way, is an integral part of the fast-growing supplier of material handling systems’ growth strategy, said CEO Chris Cole.

The 122,000-square-foot addition will allow Intelligrated to expand engineering, research and development staffing.  The company added 180 mostly technical and professional Ohio jobs in the past year and expects to add 200 more employees in 2013.

“We have a facility here that I think is the most modern and advanced facility in our field,” said Cole.  “This facility should make it easy to hire the very best technical talent in the industry.”

The expansion is the latest milestone in the company’s rapid growth since it launched in 2001, a week before the 9/11 attacks.  Intelligrated acquired larger rival FKI Logistex’s North American operations in 2009 and completed the acquisition of New York-based Knighted, a provider of supply chain software solutions, in December.

Intelligrated, one of Greater Cincinnati’s largest privately held companies, doesn’t disclose sales, but Cole said the company broke $600 million in new orders in 2012 and enjoyed a record year in profitability.

“When we started we wanted to be a $500 million company.  We passed that goal now and we’re working on the goal to a billion dollars or more in sales and we think we can do in the next five years,” he said.

Mason’s newest business is ready to rock.

School of Rock, a performance-based music school for people of all ages, will celebrate the grand opening of its first Cincinnati area location Saturday at 755 Reading Road in Mason.

The bash kicks off at 12:15 p.m. in typical rocker style with a ritual guitar smashing.  Live entertainment from students and local bands will perform throughout the day, with live broadcasting by WEBN.

Guests can participate in jam sessions with indie band Majestic Man and enter to win prizes, including a free week of summer camp.

The national music education company operates more than 80 schools in 26 states and Mexico.  The Mason opening marks the company’s third Ohio location — two other locations operate in the Cleveland area.

The youth-driven school inspired the 2003 movie, “School of Rock, about a wannabe rocker who poses as a substitute teacher and tries to turn his class into rock stars.

Franchise owner Tim Garry recently moved back to Cincinnati after a long career in New York as an investment manager.  He was sold on the School of Rock concept after his two sons, Jamie and Matthew, went through the program at a New Jersey school.

“It was great to see them having a blast, and gratifying to watch them develop as musicians,” said Garry, of Pleasant Ridge.  “In fact, my eldest moved on to the Berklee College of Music, which would have never happened without his School of Rock experience.”

School of Rock sets itself apart from more traditional music schools by giving students the chance to perform on stage in front of live audiences, says Garry.

“A lot of kids will not thrive in private lessons because they find it boring,” Garry explained.  ”Here, we believe the best way to learn music is to play music.  It becomes much more engaging for (students) and they’re more likely to stick with it.”

“It’s essentially team sports for the arts,” he added.

Beginning students start with Rock 101, which teaches students principal instruments, including guitar, drums, bass, keyboard and vocals.

Intermediate to advanced students move on to the Performance Program, where they learn harmonies and musicianship during weekly private lessons and group sessions in preparation for a live performance.

Monthly membership cost is $275 for both programs.  Adult programs are also offered.

The newly-renovated 5,000 square-foot facility boasts seven lesson rooms, two band rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and the Sonic Boom Room, a 1,600 square-foot performance space with professional stage, sound and lighting equipment.

Garry says he plans to open additional locations in Cincinnati in the next five years.

“Cincinnati has a tremendously strong music heritage, one that I think that’s underrated,” he said.  “I expect us to become a major cultural institution within Cincinnati.”
