Mason’s extra practice shows results

Posted by rrichardson January 11th, 2013, 7:15 pm Post a Comment

Mason girls bowling teamBrandon Kors reports:

The Mason girls bowling team took it upon themselves to receive private instructions in the summer after last season’s loss in districts. So far, the extra practice has resulted in a 10-1 overall record and a 5-0 record in the Greater Miami Conference.

The Comets are ranked number one in the Enquirer area coaches’ poll. The team has made districts the past two years.  Today, the team will compete in the Bearcat High School Classic. The Comets will then gear up for sectionals Feb. 13. Sectionals will be held at Crosstown Lanes or Colerain Bowl.

Mason girls bowling coach Connie Smith said a birth in the state championship is not out of reach. She said she could sense an immediate change in the bowlers from last season, noting that their footwork was significantly better.

“At the beginning of this year I saw every one of the girls bowling technique change significantly and I knew this was going to be a very special team,” Smith said. Senior captain Emily Harrison, who leads the team with an average of 198, has seen a 19 point increase in her average this year.

Smith said she expected a good season and has been very  impressed that the team’s averages have gone up across the board.

“I really did expect a lot this year,” Smith said. “ I wasn’t expecting first placer per se but they have really excelled, the whole team, all their averages have gone up since last year.”

Marc Hardin reports:

Thursday’s Division I Southwest District boys’ golf tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course began with a 90-minute frost delay and ended with Mason shooting a hot round while making school history.

The Comets received individual scores of 2-over-par 74 from three players and won their first district title with a team score of 300 on the Woodside and Highlands courses.

Mason beat runner-up Centerville (309) by nine shots and finished 13 ahead of third-place Moeller (313). All three teams advance to next week’s big-school state tournament at Ohio State.

The win for the boys made it an historic, double-championship day for Mason. The district-winning girls received their first-place hardware 30 minutes before the boys claimed their winning trophy.

“We’ve never had a team or an individual go to the state tournament until today,” Mason second-year coach Tim Lambert said.

“It’s been a good year because we won the Greater Miami Conference for the first time, too. But this is huge, winning with the girls. We’re really happy to finally be going to state.”

Mason’s Bryan King, Alex Ebel and No. 5 player Braydon Hack carded matching scores of 74. P.J. Greene shot 78 while sophomore Scott Purvis, the Comets’ lone non-senior, came in with an 82.

King won a six-man, three-hole playoff for second place. Vandalia Butler’s Shawn Downing was medalist with a 72.

“Our upperclassmen closed the back nine with amazing golf,” Lambert said. “To get three 74s is incredible.”

Ebel, who has been playing with a sore back, shot 35 on the back nine.

“Going to state for the first time, in my senior year, is sweet,” said Ebel. “Now we have to do what the girls did when they won state. We got to win this year then build a dynasty.”

Moeller was led by a score of 74 from Andrew Benza. Amelia’s Jake Brinker qualified to state as an individual after shooting a 74.

Comets improve under Castner

Posted by rrichardson August 9th, 2012, 10:42 am Post a Comment
Brian Castner

Kevin Goheen reports:

The name of the game doesn’t matter to Brian Castner when it comes to coaching. There’s a basic formula he’s learned that’s worked for him regardless of the playing surface.

“It’s about people and how you relate with them and how you’re going to make this thing work,” said Castner, the third-year football coach at Mason who for 11 years guided the Comets’ softball program as one of the region’s elite teams.

“The X’s and O’s will come but that’s really not a priority to me. It still isn’t. I’m 38 years old and I can honestly tell you I love my job for those reasons.”

The football Comets have improved each of Castner’s first two seasons, earning their first winning record in the Greater Miami Conference in 2010 and then going 7-4 with a Division I playoff berth last year. Despite losing 17 starters to graduation from last season Castner is confident the program will remain on the upward track as it fights to put itself in the GMC title race with favorites Colerain and Middletown.

“Last year was a year of true belief in what we do,” said Castner. “We won last year and we won with confidence by doing things the right way all of the time.”

Safeties Corey Quallen and Randy Anderson, linebacker Andrew Hauser, offensive lineman Elijah Nkansah and running back Darryl Johnson are the five returning starters. Last year the Comets won five of their final six regular-season games to earn the program’s first postseason berth since 2004. Mason joined the GMC in 2007 and won just eight games in its first three seasons in the league.

Castner had been an assistant under Gary Popovich at Mason before taking a position on Steve Specht’s staff at St. Xavier for five seasons. His first order of business at Mason was to make the players understand not only did he believe they could win in the GMC and beyond, but that they would.

“He came in yelling, motivating and saying we were going to win championships,” said Johnson, a first-team all-GMC selection last year. “He was positive and it carried over to us. I thought he was crazy but I now know he did everything for a reason.”

Johnson had 1,484 all-purpose yards last year, including rushing for more than 100 yards in seven games. Quallen was a second-team all-GMC pick while Hauser returns at middle linebacker for a defense that didn’t allow more than 21 points in a game following a 56-20 loss to Colerain in Week 4. Hauser was second on the team last year with 64 tackles.

The Comets lost at St. Xavier, the eventual regional champion, 17-6 in the first round of the playoffs last year but it was just a step in the overall development Castner is instituting.

“We have a family aspect now,” said Hauser. “It used to be that everyone was real individual and did things for themselves but he’s preached family with us.”

Mason girls’ golf team deep in returning talent this year

Mark Schmetzer reports:

Mason’s girls’ golf  team is deep in returning talent this year.

First-year coach Karen Binzel has four of the top five players from last year’s Comets team back, led by senior Tara Liebert.

“She’s playing outstanding golf,” said Binzel, who’s worked her way up through the Mason program with the seniors on this year’s team.

Junior Miranda Lambert, the Cincinnati Women’s Junior Met champion, and sophomore Morgan Schaffer also will be strong contenders in what Binzel expects will be spirited competition for a spot in Mason’s top five.

It would only become more heated with the expected arrival of senior Stephanie O’Loughlin, a transfer from San Diego.

“If you asked me to pick a top five, I couldn’t do it,” Binzel said. “We have 10 girls who could potentially fill the top five spots.”

Teams will compete this year in one of two divisions. The Southwest Ohio Division II sectional tournaments are scheduled for Sept. 24 and Sept. 26 with the district tournament scheduled for Oct. 3 at Pipestone Golf Course.

The Division I sectionals are set for Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 with the district event set for Oct. 11 at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

The Division II state tournament is scheduled for Oct. 12-13 with the Division I event Oct. 19-20, both at the Ohio State University Gray Course.

Mike Dyer reports:

Mason senior right-handed pitcher Andrew McDonald made a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech earlier this summer, according to Mason baseball coach Ken Gray.

McDonald was 8-0 with 54 strikeouts with a 0.80 ERA in 44 innings pitched. He also had offers that included UC and Ohio State.

McDonald was first-team all-Greater Miami Conference this spring. Mason was 20-8 overall and 16-2 as GMC champs this spring.

McDonald said he verbally committed to the Hokies toward the end of June. He said he was impressed with the campus and the baseball facilities.

McDonald, who scored a 29 on his ACT, intends to study mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech.

Mason pummels Turpin, 12-2

Kevin Goheen reports:

Mason scored in each of the first three innings, including crossing the plate six times in the third inning, to advance to its ninth consecutive Division I district softball title game with a 12-2 victory against Turpin Tuesday afternoon at Lakota West.

The game, postponed from Monday due to wet field conditions, ended in the top of the fifth because of the 10-run rule when freshman Jordan Sullivan beat a throw home to score on a fielder’s choice. It was Sullivan’s third run scored of the game.

Mason (18-10) is the No. 1 seed in the Cincinnati sectional and will face No. 2 Fairfield Friday at 5 p.m. at Lakota East. The two Greater Miami Conference rivals split their two regular season games. The winner of the rubber match will earn a trip to the regional tournament.

“Fairfield is a very good team, a GMC rival and they are hitting the ball very well,” said Mason coach Liann Muff. “That will be a tough game but we’re looking forward to it. Any time you get a chance to play a GMC rival it’s a good day.”

Turpin got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior second baseman Kelci Martin singled with one out and later scored on a throwing error. Two of the three hits Turpin got off of Mason senior pitcher Sarah Browning came in the first inning.

The Comets answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning off of Turpin sophomore Beth Persicano. Sullivan led off with an infield hit, went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior leftfielder Macy Hubbard and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Margo Hutchison. Browning later delivered a two-run double to give Mason the lead for good.

Mason added two more runs in the second inning before their six-run third inning. All of the runs were driven in on three consecutive two-run, two-out hits; Hubbard singled in the first two runs, senior Jillian Richardson doubled in the next two and then scored when Hutchinson hit her 10th home run of the season.

“We started off slow but when we got up to the plate we found we could hit (Persicano) and we kept building from there,” said Browning.

Browning retired the final eight batters to improve to 13-8 on the season.

Turpin, the No. 7 seed, ends its season at 18-4. It is the fourth time in the last five seasons the Spartans have won at least 17 games.

The Spartans didn’t help themselves by committing three errors. They had committed just 27 errors in their 21 previous games.

“We didn’t lose this one, we got beat by clearly the better team,” said Turpin coach Tom McGill. “I feel bad for the kids. That’s not the way you want your seniors to go out. It’s a young group but three seniors who are very clearly the leaders and we’ll miss them a lot. They’ve meant a lot to the program.”

MASON 12, TURPIN 2 (5 Innings)

WP – Browning (13-8); LP – Persicano (8-3). Hitting leaders: M – Sullivan 2-4; Hubbard 2 RBI; Richardson 2B, 2 RBI; Hutchison 2B, 3 RBI; Browning 2B, 2 RBI; Hayner 3B. Records: Turpin 18-4, Mason 18-10.

Mason clinched its first Greater Miami Conference baseball title with a 3-2 victory over Fairfield on Monday night.

Fairfield threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, but Mason caught runners at the plate to end both innings and hang on to the lead.
