Three Mason girls earn scholarships for being “kind-hearted”

Three Mason girls are among 36 area eighth-graders to receive a scholarship from the Aubrey Rose Hollenkamp Foundation.

Allyson Benz, Audrey Seminara and Connor Stelljes, who all attended St. Susanna, are among the scholarship recipients.

The foundation awarded the scholarships to girls entering Catholic high schools who demonstrated “kind-heartedness.”

Jerry and Nancy Hollenkamp of Bridgetown founded the organization in memory of the youngest of their three children, Aubrey Rose Hollenkamp, who in 1997 was born six weeks premature with two holes in her heart. In her short life, she underwent five heart surgeries, including a heart and double lung transplant when she was 18 months old.

Since its start in 2001, the foundation has helped pay the medical bills of more than 167 families of children with life-threatening illnesses.

It’s a spirit of kind-heartedness the Hollenkamps say is epitomized in each of the scholarship winners.

The students each received a $500 scholarship and were honored at a reception held earlier this summer.
