Mason boy’s ‘play of a lifetime’ goes viral

Posted by rrichardson November 29th, 2012, 4:47 pm Post a Comment

A Mason second grader is receiving national attention after making a “play of a lifetime” that’s attracted the attention of an NFL quarterback and made it on ESPN.

On Wednesday, New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees tweeted a link of a video showing 7-year-old Michael Niere (#83) of Mason making a one-handed interception and initially running the wrong way with the ball before running it back for a touchdown.

Drew Brees tweet“WOW! Mason OH 2nd grader makes 1 handed pic return TD. Wasn’t sure which way to run at first. @sportsnation #SCTop10 http://bit.ly/QiUqrb,” Brees tweeted to his more than 1.4 million followers.

After Brees’ tweet, the play was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter and Good Morning America.

“This has taken on a life of its own,” said Michael’s mother, Judy Niere, of the media attention.

“At first (Michael) was self-conscious about it, but when he saw the news cameras, he thought it was pretty cool. You could tell he was proud,” she said.

Jason Kaylor, who coaches the Mason Comets “Team Kaylor” team, posted the video on the website Swink.tv earlier this month. Brees is a spokesperson for the site, which allows players of all levels to create and share highlights of their plays.

Michael NiereThe clip is from an October game against a Sharonville team. The Comets were ahead when Michael, who Kaylor describes as one of the better athletes on the team, made his incredible play.

Kaylor said the play is all the more impressive considering the first-year team hasn’t worked much on passing and interceptions in practices.

“Some might call it luck. Some might call it great coaching. It was an amazing play,” said Kaylor, who played four years at Indiana University. “The mechanics alone that go into the play are tremendous. From a technical aspect, I haven’t seen anything better in my years of playing football.”

Judy Niere thinks luck may have played more of a role that day.

“As a mom, I should say it’s his technical skill, but I think it’s a total fluke and the ball landed in his hand and he said, ‘Oh my gosh, where do I go?,’” she said with a laugh.

The national spotlight has helped Michael, a second grade student at Western Row Elementary, gain more confidence in his skills and made football his new favorite sport, said his mother.

“I think this will be his sport now for a while,” she said. “If nothing else, we’ll save it and embarrass him years from now.”

Mason falls to Withrow in sectional final

Posted by rrichardson March 5th, 2012, 10:05 am Post a Comment
Todd Reed

Withrow junior Devin Williams guards Mason's Todd Reed tightly during the Tigers' 63-57 win over the Comets March 4 at UC's Fifth Third Arena

Kevin Goheen reports:

Withrow junior guard Timothy Coleman has a tendency to scare his coach Ty Gilbert. Like a lot of shooters, when Coleman gets a couple of 3-pointers to go his way he’ll won’t shy away from taking more.

It was Coleman’s ability to find shots for himself and his teammates inside the arc, however, that proved the difference Sunday in a 63-57 win for the Tigers against fourth-seeded Mason Sunday afternoon at the University of Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena.

Coleman scored 24 points, including making three of his four 3-pointers in the first half, and added three assists and one steal for the No. 7 seed Tigers, who beat Mason in the sectional final for the second year in a row.

Darin Harris

Withrow junior Corey Wise guards Mason's Darin Harris March 4 at UC's Fifth Third Arena. The Tigers won the game 63-57.

Withrow (17-6) advances to play Springboro (18-4) next Saturday at 7 p.m. at UD Arena in a district final. Mason ends its season at 18-4.

“He falls in love with the three so at halftime I told he couldn’t fall in love with the three, he had to mix it up,” said Gilbert. “He finally listened. Tim will drive you crazy sometimes but I’ll take him today.”

The game was tight throughout and started with a frantic pace. Withrow led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter and the teams were tied 30-30 going into the halftime locker room.

Senior forward Darin Harris scored 16 points in the first half for Mason but Withrow paid greater attention to him in the second half. Junior guard Corey Wise got the bulk of that assignment and Harris was held to just one 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining.

“I wanted to keep him from using his left hand because that’s his strong hand. I wanted to contain him and play him aggressive,” said Wise, who scored seven points. “It seemed like he got rattled when we played physical with him.”

Mason led 45-44 going into the fourth quarter after senior forward Mike Van Kleuen made a 3-pointer from the left corner.

Withrow had a 50-47 lead before senior guard JD Sprague, who scored 18 points, tied the game with a 3-pointer with 4:46 remaining. Withrow answered by holding Mason scoreless for the next 3:42 and building its lead to 58-50.

The Tigers, who came into the game making just 63.2 percent of their free throws, made nine of 12 attempts in an 80-second span. Coleman was 6-of-8 down the stretch while senior forward Erron Nichols, a 49 percent free throw shooter this season, made three of his four attempts.

“We fouled some guys who are shooting 40-something percent and they made them. They executed and we didn’t at the end,” said Mason coach Greg Richards. “We knew (Coleman) is a very good player but more with penetration than with threes. He really stepped up his game today.”

Withrow (17-6): Gooch 1 3 5, Coleman 7 6 24, Beamon 1 0 2, Williams 4 1 9, Wise 3 0 7, Jordan 3 1 7, Nichols 1 3 5, Robertson 1 0 2, Nix 1 0 2. Totals 22 14 63.

Mason (18-4): Matula 0 1 1, Sprague 7 2 18, Niehoff 1 0 2, Reale 1 0 2, Harris 8 2 19, Van Kleuen 7 0 15. Totals 23 7 57.

Withrow 17 13 14 19 – 63
Mason 16 14 15 12 – 57

Halftime: Tied, 30-30. 3-pointers: W – 5 (Coleman 4, Wise); M – 4 (Sprague 2, Harris, Van Klueuen).

Comets clinch 4th straight district berth

Posted by rrichardson February 25th, 2011, 5:33 pm Post a Comment

Fifth-seeded Mason earned its fourth consecutive trip to a Division I district championship game with a 57-39 win over ninth-seeded Mount Healthy in a sectional final Wednesday at Lakota East.

“The seniors set the tone,” Matula said. “They wanted and expected to get back to that game.”

Enquirer contributor Mark Schmetzer has the night’s highlights:

Comets sophomore center Kayla McDowell scored a game-high 15 points. Classmate Sydney Neal added 14 and junior Brianna Glover scored 10.

Mason (16-6), the No. 3 team in the Enquirer Division I area coaches poll, will take a five-game winning streak into the district championship game at 1 p.m. March 5 at Harrison against Centerville, which defeated Wayne 49-36 Wednesday.

The Comets shot 57.1 percent (24-of-42) and committed just 12 turnovers.

“They shot the ball well and we didn’t turn them over,” said Harrison coach Jim Pugh, who complimented the ball-handling of Mason senior point guard Sarah Hunter. “That’s been our game plan all year. They took care of the ball today. (Hunter) handled the ball extremely well. She made the right decisions.”

Mason took the lead for good at 12-11 on Glover’s putback with two minutes left in the first quarter. The Comets capitalized on the Owls going 2-for-8 from the field in the second quarter to lead 33-18 at halftime.

The shooting gap widened in the third quarter when Mount Healthy was 3-of-17 from the field while Mason went 6-for-9 in opening a 24-point lead.

Hunter said the Comets are playing as well as they have all season.

“We’re not peaking yet,” she said, “but we’re on the road there.”

Mason (16-6) – Hunter 3 1 8, Moses 1 0 3, Glover 5 0 10, McDowell 6 3 15, Neal 6 2 14, Ammons 0 1 1, Gunn 3 0 6. Totals: 24 7 57.

Mason sets first in wrestling program record

Posted by rrichardson February 21st, 2011, 4:53 pm Post a Comment
Mason's Ruben Victoria and Moeller's Tyler Tepe

Mason may have finished in second place at Saturday’s Southwest Ohio Division I Sectional wrestling meet at Moeller, but the team earned a first in qualifying all 14 of its wrestlers for the first time in the program’s history.

The second-ranked Comets finished with 230.5 points behind the Crusader’s 278.5 points. Mason had beaten Moeller at the sectional last season.

The Enquirer has more on the two schools’ closely fought struggle for the title.

Moeller and Mason matched up eight times in the tournament and split victories. Mason won four of the six championship matchups, however, including junior Daniele Tedoldi’s 7-3 comeback win at 215 pounds against top-seeded Moeller freshman Chalmer Frueauaf.

Frueauaf had beaten Tedoldi 4-1 iwhen the teams met for a dual meet two weeks ago at Mason. He trailed 3-1 on Saturday before rallying. Tedoldi, the third seed, had beaten No. 2 seed Ameer Daniels of Northwest, 3-2, in the semifinals.

Mason junior Ruben Victoria (pictured, above) got the finals started off with a 7-4 win against Moeller junior Tyler Tepe.

Brothers Eion and Aaron Walden won back-to-back titles at 152 and 160, respectively. EionWalden, a junior, had lost 5-0 to Moeller junior Michael Blum in the dual meet but beat Blum 5-4 on Saturday.

Aaron Walden, a senior, scored a two-point reversal against Moeller’s Krieg Grego just before time ran out in the third period.

It’s the second year in a row the brothers have won sectional titles at Moeller.

“This sectional and district is one of the toughest in Ohio and that’s why coach (Craig Murnan) had us come here,” said Aaron Walden. “Winning doesn’t earn as much if you don’t earn it.”

The top four placers in each weight class advance to the district tournament at Fairfield this weekend.

Mason Comets clinch win in overtime

Posted by rrichardson February 7th, 2011, 1:24 pm Post a Comment

Mason Kayla McDowell (15) shoots over Sycamore Alexis Newbolt (3) in the second period.

The Mason Comets triumphed over conference rival Sycamore Saturday after sophomore Kayla McDowell knocked down a pair of free throws to force overtime and then sank another pair with 4 seconds remaining to clinch Mason’s 44-39 victory.

Matt Mulcahey, reporting for The Enquirer, has more on this tense and hard-fought game between the Greater Miami Conference rivals:

After four fourth-quarter ties between the “clones,” Sycamore held a 35-33 lead with just under a minute to play when McDowell was fouled after pulling down an offensive rebound. Her free throws tied the game and despite 51 seconds to work with, the best shot Sycamore could manage at the end of regulation was an off balance runner by Ashley Schaefer that misfired.

Sycamore junior Alexis Newbolt christened the extra frame with a pair of buckets to move the Aves ahead 39-37. A travel violation by Mason returned the ball to Sycamore with 56 seconds, but the Aves gave it back after a five-second violation at the top of the key by Schafer.

Mason took advantage as junior Brianna Glover dumped in a turnaround shot in the post despite being double teamed to put Mason ahead for good, 40-39.

Sarah Hunter extended the lead with two free throws with 17 seconds remaining and McDowell sank two more charity tosses with four ticks left.

The Comets connected on 9-of-13 free throws in the game. Sycamore attempted only three.

“We preach all the time that defense, free throws and rebounds are going to win you close games and we did those things tonight,” Matula said.

Though the game eventually morphed into the expected defensive battle, it started with a surprising burst of offense.

Opening the game with an atypical starting lineup of five seniors in honor of Senior Night, Sycamore scored 10 of the first quarter’s final 12 points to take an early 14-6 lead. All of those Aves points came in the paint.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that on senior night, you’re either going to get an emotional level that carries you or can deflate you and early on it was carrying them and they played well,” Matula said.

Mason answered in the second period, scoring the first seven points to draw to within one point at 21-20 at the half. Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half, but struggled holding onto the ball with a combined 16 turnovers at the break.
