Mason junior Nick Grismer surged into the lead with less than a mile to run and won the boys’ Section I (big school) event in 16:06.84 Saturday at the Mason Cross Country Invitational at Corwin Nixon Park.
Grismer led the Mason boys to their second straight win in their own event.
St. Ursula junior Annie Heffernan cruised to the girls’ Section I win in 18:09.32, and McNicholas senior Catherine Adams broke 20 minutes for the first time as she won the girls’ Section II event in 19:52.77.
Carmel (Indiana) won the Section I girls’ team title in a showdown of the No. 1 teams in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Louisville (Ky.) Assumption was second, and Mason finished third overall.
Adams’ McNick team won the Section II girls’ title, and Springfield Shawnee took the boys’ Section II title.
Grismer bested a pack of five runners up front that included teammate senior Tom Clark in third place.
“I really wasn’t feeling well, but I knew everyone else wasn’t feeling well and that’s when you just have to take it,” Grismer said.
The Comets easily took the team title with 59 points, 100 better than second-place Louisville Trinity.
The Mason boys had the first-, third- and ninth-place finishers.
“There’s no huge gaps for us,” Grismer said. “We have a lot of depth, which we’re blessed to have.”
Heffernan, ranked No. 8 nationally by MileSplit, was close to the course record and was 20 seconds better than second-place Christine Frederick (18:29.83), an Ursuline senior.
Heffernan has won all four events St. Ursula has entered this season.
