Students from Miami University visited students at Mason Early Childhood Center last week to help screen reading assessments.

The college students, all psychology majors, conducted formative assessments of students to help tailor specific learning programs based on each child’s level and abilities.
The collaboration helps both students and teachers, says Heidi Wachtman, a school psychologist.

“Having Miami students volunteer to act as the universal screeners really helps. It allows time to do these important one-on-one assessments, without taking instructional time away from our teachers,” she said.

“Even more importantly, these assessments are part of our district’s ‘Response to Intervention’ approach, and the data gives teachers the information they need to provide extra support for students who may be struggling to learn, as well as extensions for students who are reading above grade level.”

Mason’s Thatcher sets mark

Posted by rrichardson February 20th, 2012, 10:02 am Post a Comment
Zoe Thatcher

Zoe Thatcher, a sophomore for Mason High School, competes in the 200-yard Freestyle on Feb. 11. Thatcher won Saturday night’s 200 freestyle race in 1:50.03.

Marc Hardin reports:

Mason’s Zoe Thatcher set a meet record in the 500-yard freestyle event Saturday night during the swimming session of the Southwest District Division I girls’ meet at Miami University. Thatcher, a sophomore, bolted to a finishing time of 4 minutes and 50.72 seconds, breaking the record of 4:51.97 set in 2010 by Turpin’s Molly Hazelbaker.

Other updates from Saturday’s big-school girls’ meet:

Thatcher also won Saturday night’s 200 freestyle race in 1:50.03. She is part of a Comet contingent heading to next week’s state meet in Canton. Mason finished second to Ursuline Academy in the final team standings in Oxford.

Ursuline received a big win from sophomore Temarie Tomley, who took the 100 freestyle in 51.49. The Lions also got a lift from their winning 200 freestyle relay team, which finished in 1:36.38 with Tomley swimming the first leg.

Ursuline did not clinch first place at the meet until Bridget Blood touched the wall as the Lions’ last swimmer in the meet-concluding 400 freestyle relay. Ursuline received 40 points for the win; third-place Mason was awarded 32.

The Comets trailed Ursuline by 12 points entering the 400 free relay, but the Lions were more than three seconds faster than Mason in the event. Mason led the Lions by 10 points after 10 events, but Ursuline picked up 34 points in Event 11, the 100 breaststroke, while the Comets earned 12.

“It was very close, almost too close,” Ursuline coach Brad Isham said. “I’m happy for the girls because this is a big goal for them.”

Mason students get jazzed up about Black History Month

Posted by rrichardson March 4th, 2011, 10:15 am Post a Comment
Team Carpe Diem wins!

Who is known as the mother of the civil rights movement in America?

Who was the first black American in space?

Don’t know?  Try asking a fifth-grader at Mason Intermediate School.

The school celebrated Black History Month in February with its annual and highly anticipated Black History Bowl competition.

“The Black History Bowl competition allows students to develop research, teamwork, and oral speaking skills while also giving them the opportunity to highlight their knowledge in a fun way,” said fifth-grade teacher Jocelyn Burlew, who organized the Bowl with fellow teacher Nick Washington.

“It also gives all students the opportunity to engage in learning that takes them beyond the textbook.”

The Bowl begins in January with each fifth-grade team selecting a group of students to represent them in the month-long competition.  Each team member is provided with a study guide, but most competitors go above and beyond the guide to study and prepare, say their teachers.

Parent volunteers Phiroza Setna and Karen Sylvester then organized and facilitated the early rounds of the competition, with eight teams moving on to the next level.  The “Elite Eight” teams had to win two of three rounds to advance to the final four.

Teams Keepers of the Earth, Carpe Diem, Pacesetters and Pioneers competed for the coveted final two slots, with teams Carpe Diem and Pioneers emerging for the final round of play.  The two teams faced off on Feb. 25 in a special school ceremony.

The Mason Intermediate Choir opened the Bowl with the African American National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a song that “celebrates our pride as Americans and as individuals,” music teacher Jocelyn Wilson told students.

The top two teams then faced off in multiple choice and short answer rounds with team Carpe Diem clinching the win.  Not only did the team win a year’s worth of bragging rights, but the team’s name will be engraved on a championship trophy to be displayed in the school’s trophy case.

Team Carpe Diem members included: Darby Clark, Teresa Snarr, Sarah Gravitt, Adelaide Choi, Avi Gutta and Elizabeth Atkins.  Team Pioneers members included: Cagnie France, Alex Ying, Lauren Rose, Jacob Bagadiong, Noorah Basher, and Sarah Rubsam.

Meanwhile, Mason Heights Elementary celebrated Black History Month with dramatic performances by students from Miami University, who told the story of freed slave Eliza Harris, who in the 1840s managed to escape from Kentucky to Ohio with her husband and children.
