Princeton upsets top-ranked Mason

Casey Weldon reports:

Senior guard Deion Isham scored a game-high 22 points to lead Princeton to a 70-66 come-from-behind victory over top-ranked Mason. The loss snaps Mason’s nine-game winning streak.

Isham, who was one of only two Vikings to finish in double figures on the night along with Nate McGill’s 15 points, helped Princeton outscore Mason 19-11 in the fourth quarter to pull off the road upset.

Mason (12-2, 6-2 GMC), which currently holds a narrow nine-point advantage over La Salle for the No. 1 spot in The Cincinnati Enquirer area boys’ basketball Division I coaches’ poll, had four players finish in double figures on the night.

Senior forward Darin Harris finished with 20 points to lead the Comets on offense. Senior JD Sprague (14 points), Michael Van Kleunen (12 points) and Tim Reale (10 points) were the other Mason starters to finish in double digits.

No. 10 Princeton (10-3, 5-3 GMC), which increases its winning streak to three games with the victory, managed to overcome 23 turnovers thanks in part to 50 percent (28 of 56) shooting from the floor and a 30 to 21 rebounding advantage over Mason.

Comets take the field

The Mason Comets face off against the Princeton Vikings tonight at Mason in what The Enquirer has named one of its games to watch.

Princeton (5-1, 2-1 GMC) at Mason (4-2, 2-1)

WHAT TO WATCH: Princeton suffered its first loss last week, but the Vikings remain a legitimate playoff contender under new coach Gary Croley. Senior quarterback Nate McGill has completed 48 of 90 passes for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns with only four interceptions, and senior running back Demarco Thomas has 556 rushing yards on 107 carries and seven touchdowns. Mason has the GMC’s No. 2 passing offense with a 133.7 yards-per-game average. Comets senior quarterback JD Sprague leads the high-powered Comets with 782 yards in the air while completing 64 of 100 passes and throwing six touchdowns.

BOTTOM LINE: Mason gets the nod at home.
