Local Rep to introduce Ohio Right-to-Work bill

Posted by rrichardson April 30th, 2013, 4:05 pm Post a Comment

Ron MaagCarl Weiser reports:

State Rep. Ron Maag, a Lebanon Republican, plans to introduce right-to-work legislation soon – but only for public sector workers.

In a request to fellow House members asking for co-sponsors, Maag wrote: ”Right to Work, also known as “Workplace Freedom,” would eliminate compulsory unionism in Ohio. This means simply that employees would be free to choose whether or not to join a labor union.”

Ohio would be the 25th state to pass right-to-work laws, he said.

State Democratic chairman Chris Redfern has already pounced, saying “Here we go again,” a reference to the bitter 2011 battle over Senate Bill 5, which would have reined in the powers and rights of public sector unions.

“Just as SB 5 was soundly rejected by Ohio voters, we expect this unnecessary sideshow – which will do nothing to create more good-paying jobs – to fail, and we intend to hold Governor Kasich accountable for choosing to focus on distractions over Ohio’s middle class,” he said in a statement.

Cintas CEO among those warning of their Obama fears

Posted by rrichardson November 1st, 2012, 8:38 am Post a Comment
Scott Farmer

Scott Farmer, CEO of Mason-based Cintas / Enquirer file photo

Cindi Andrews reports:

The CEO of Mason-based Cintas, a top Republican donor, sent an email to employees obliquely sharing his concerns about a second Obama term.

One Florida executive flatly told his 7,000 workers that there would be layoffs if his taxes increase as a result of the election, and another asked his employees to give money to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The line between business and politics seems to be blurring as the too-close-to-call presidential election approaches, to the dismay of some employees. The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which removed limits on corporate campaign contributions, has allowed business leaders to go further in urging their employees to vote a particular way, and Romney himself has encouraged business leaders to do so.

But the boss is treading in tricky territory when he or she talks politics with employees, some warn.

Advocates say it’s helpful for employees to know the potential impact of an election on their company. But management and political experts say partisan emails from the boss are both bad business and questionable politics – more likely to create a workplace distraction than to change anyone’s vote.

“All it does is invite dissension,” said Ralph Katerberg, a management professor at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Business.

Scott Farmer, leader of the uniform and document management company Cintas, detailed his concerns about Obama’s health care law and the possibility of more taxes and regulation in an email to employees Oct. 19.

“The over-regulation that business is facing today from the various administrative agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Security Exchange Commission (SEC), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and others is suffocating many companies,” Farmer wrote. “This uncertainty felt by many of our customers about their ability to run and grow their businesses prevents them from adding jobs which hurts our ability to grow and add jobs.”

Farmer, who has given $52,500 to Romney and the Romney Victory committee this year, never told employees how to vote.

The email was made public when a friend of an employee posted the text of it on her blog, calling it “employee intimidation.” Cintas spokeswoman Heather Maley confirmed Farmer sent the email but said employees – referred to at Cintas as “partners” – haven’t objected to it.

Statewide policy on early vote possible

Posted by rrichardson August 15th, 2012, 10:11 am Post a Comment

Early VoteBarry M. Horstman reports:

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, under growing pressure to resolve a contentious dispute over whether counties should have extra evening and weekend voting hours this fall, on Tuesday told The Enquirer he is moving toward a statewide order on the politically charged issue.

Husted, who previously has said he preferred to leave that issue in the hands of Ohio’s 88 county boards of elections, said in an interview that he has asked Ohio Attorney Gen. Mike DeWine to determine whether he has the authority, “which I believe I do,” to impose a statewide plan on possible extra in-person voting hours starting Oct. 2. DeWine has promised to resolve the legal question quickly, Husted said.

Husted did not specify how potentially expansive or restrictive any statewide policy he establishes might be, saying only that he would seek a formula “in the best interest of all 88 counties.”

The move comes as the partisan divide between which Ohio counties will have extra night and weekend voting hours this fall and which won’t is growing, at least as things stand currently.

An Enquirer analysis shows that major urban counties where Husted prevented extra hours in the weeks leading up to Nov. 6 are ones that in 2008 collectively gave then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama nearly a 500,000-vote bulge.

Nine other counties that have approved additional early night and weekend hours – decisions made without Husted’s involvement – handed U.S. Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, a surplus of roughly 90,000 votes four years ago.

In plans submitted last month to Husted’s office, another 16 counties – most of which traditionally vote Republican – also indicated preliminary proposals to add extra voting hours this fall. Those plans, though, could be changed by the local boards of elections or a Husted directive.

“I’ve been consistent in seeking uniformity,” said Husted, who in recent weeks cast tie-breaking votes blocking extra hours in major urban counties that generally vote Democratic even as some GOP-leaning counties were extending their early voting timetables.

“It’s my critics who have been inconsistent,” Husted added. “One moment they’re for local control. The next they’re for state control, depending on the outcome they’d like to achieve.”

Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Burke says his objective is a simple one: “We just want a fair, balanced fight.

Warren Co. GOP faithful eager for Portman pick

Posted by rrichardson July 17th, 2012, 12:04 pm Post a Comment
Rob Portman & Mitt Romney

Ohio senator Rob Portman and Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney (right) wave to a crowd of supporters outside of K’s Hamburger Shop, in Troy, during a series of Ohio campaign events on Sunday, June 17. The Enquirer/ Amanda Davidson

Paul E. Kostyu reports:

In an 8½-minute speech in Lebanon Monday, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman blasted the economic policies of President Barack Obama, but what the supporters present really wanted to know is whether the Republican from Terrace Park will be the party’s vice presidential nominee.

The New York Times reported Monday that presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney could announce his vice presidential pick this week. Romney’s campaign denied a decision had been made.

Portman appeared in Republican-strong Warren County at the party’s headquarters adjacent to the historic Golden Lamb Inn, a regular stop for Republicans, including presidents. Portman appeared in the crowded and stifling hot Republican headquarters about two hours before Obama held a town hall meeting at Cincinnati’s Music Hall.

The fact that Portman is on the short list of Romney’s potential vice presidential candidates sits just fine with people here.

“Rob Portman is all about integrity,” said James Norris, a teacher and Lebanon city councilman, who attended the event. “He’s such a straightforward guy. It’s so refreshing. What a great vice president catch he would be.”

George Leasure agreed. He said he’s been telling Portman for 10 years that he should be in the White House.

“Rob Portman has enormous experience,” said Jennifer Sooy of Springboro, who was at the Portman event with her identical twin, Kathleen.

The two practically finished each others’ sentences as they talked about Romney and Portman.

“He has a business background,” Kathleen Sooy said of Portman. “He knows his public.”

Portman challenged Obama to come to Warren County to talk to the middle class and “workers on the shop floor.” He said people are worried about federal policies, the country’s debt and the economy.

“Tell the American people what’s going on with the economy,” Portman urged Obama. “American potential is not being achieved. American destiny is not being achieved.”

Portman said Romney “understands how to create jobs. He knows that government doesn’t create jobs; it’s the private sector that the creates jobs.”

Romney will make three appearances in Ohio this week, with fundraisers in Toledo and Canton on Wednesday with a public appearance in between in Bowling Green.

Vice President Joe Biden is also expected to visit Ohio this week, but details have not been announced.

Clooney’s fundraiser for Obama to set record

Posted by rrichardson May 4th, 2012, 12:09 pm Post a Comment

The Ides of MarchCarl Weiser reports:

A George Clooney-hosted fundraiser for President Barack Obama is expected to raise more money than any presidential fundraiser in history.

Citing “campaign sources,” The Hollywood Reporter says the  dinner has sold out and is expected to raise $12 million:

One-hundred-and-fifty high rollers — including Hollywood studio heads, celebrities and an array of entertainment industry execs — have paid $40,000 apiece to dine with the president at Clooney’s Studio City home on May 10. DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg, the president’s major entertainment industry fundraiser, has been spearheading the event along with Hollywood political consultant Andy Spahn.

Clooney, who grew up in Fort Mitchell, Mason and Augusta, used Cincinnati as the setting of  ’The Ides of March,’ his 2011 movie about a Democratic presidential candidate.
