Storm mostly bypasses region – still affecting schools, traffic

Posted by rrichardson March 25th, 2013, 8:38 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major winter storm mostly bypassed Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overnight, leaving just light snow accumulation.

Most areas saw at least an inch of snow late Sunday and early today. Another inch could fall today.

Officially, 1 inch was recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and in places like Blue Ash, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Over on the west side of Hamilton County, Cheviot has 1.9 inches. To the north of Cincinnati, Lebanon and Oxford are waking up to 2 inches. In the Butler County seat of Hamilton, 3 inches were recorded.

There are some school closings and delays. Lebanon, Mount Healthy, Moeller and Northwest schools are all closed.

Check our school closings database.

Light snow will fall this morning and afternoon as the back-end of the storm moves out of southeastern Indiana into our region, said meteorologist Andy Latto.

A winter storm advisory remains in effect for most of the region until 2 p.m. Areas to the north of the city in Butler and Warren counties are under a winter storm warning.

Snow storm could be ‘pretty significant’

Posted by rrichardson March 22nd, 2013, 8:48 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major winter storm could be headed our way early next week.

Anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall Sunday through Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Temperatures will hover in the mid-30s Sunday before plunging into the 20s overnight.

What hopefully would be the final snowstorm of the season as spring struggles to replace winter could start as mix of rain and snow Sunday before changing to all snow after dark, said meteorologist Andy Latto.

“It could be pretty significant,” he said.

By the Monday morning, commuters could be trudging to work in at least 3 inches of snow. The high temperature will only be 38.

Light snow could continue throughout the day before ending by 5 p.m.

The most snow accumulation is expected to fall in the northern suburbs of Butler and Warren counties.

Potential for 1-3 inches of snow this weekend

Posted by rrichardson March 21st, 2013, 8:43 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Better warm up the car this morning.

Wind chills are in the single digits as an Arctic mass of air hangs over Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky on this the first full day of spring. Some areas are even seeing snow flurries.

It’s 23 degrees with a wind chill of 9 at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. A stray snow flurry blew around overnight and could still drift this morning.

Lebanon schools up in Warren County have a two hour delay for grades 1-6 and there is no morning kindergarten. Kings Local is starting its elementary schools two hours later than normal, and Little Miami schools are on a 90-minute delay.

Later, the high temperature will only climb to 33 or 34 with a wind chill around 22, a good 20 degrees lower than normal for this time of year.

Expect snow squalls during drive home

Posted by rrichardson March 13th, 2013, 5:32 pm Post a Comment

Janice Morse reports:

During this evening’s commute, “brief but intense” snow squalls could make driving dicey, the National Weather Service says.

An advisory, issued around 5 p.m., and remains in effect until 7 tonight for Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, the weather service said.

“These snow squalls will produce little in the way of accumulation. However, they can reduce visibilities significantly,” the advisory says, warning that drivers may be unable to see vehicles directly in front of them.

“At a minimum, road surfaces will be wet, which lessens traction,” the weather service said. “This, combined with the loss of visibility means the potential for traffic accidents is escalated with these squalls in the area.”

Motorists are advised to slow down but avoid rapid braking, which could cause drivers to lose control — or could cause rear-end collisions.

Drivers likely would remain in the squall line for 10 minutes or less, the weather service said.

Light snow showers possible

Posted by rrichardson March 12th, 2013, 8:48 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

After two inches of rain soaked Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky on Monday, a cold blast of air has settled over the region, bringing the chance for light snow tonight and early Wednesday.

It will be damp and cooler than normal today with the high temperature only reaching 45 degrees, about 5 degrees below where it should be this time of year, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

We’ll see a mix of clouds and sun this afternoon before heavy clouds roll in after dark. The overnight low will fall to 28.

There’s a 30 percent chance for light snow showers tonight and early Wednesday. Less than a half inch could accumulate.

Wednesday afternoon will be cold with the high struggling to make it to a blustery 36 degrees.

The sun will return Thursday with highs returning to the 40s.

Snow doesn’t stop work at Kings Island

Posted by rrichardson March 6th, 2013, 2:42 pm Post a Comment

A major winter storm that dumped heavy snow across the region overnight didn’t stop work crews at Kings Island as the Mason theme park gears up for its 41st season.

Crews spent Wednesday morning shoveling and removing snow from rides to continue off-season maintenance work.

A crew of about 50 mechanics, carpenters and welders work year round to conduct testing and maintenance of the park’s 46 rides.  The bulk of the work takes place in the park’s off-season months of November through late April.

“I think a lot of people think that you just swing the gates shut when the park closes and swing them open when it’s time to open.  It’s completely different than that.  This is our busiest time of the year.  We’re working right up to park opening,” said Tom Dillingham, the park’s manager of rides and mechanical maintenance.

Kings Island opens for the 2013 season on April 27.

Snow tapers off for morning commute

Posted by rrichardson March 6th, 2013, 8:39 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major winter storm socked Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overnight, dumping heavy snow across roads and closing hundreds of schools and businesses Wednesday.

Anywhere from 3 to 7 inches of snow blanketed our region, with the most north of metro Cincinnati, in Butler and Warren counties.

Mason and Kings schools are closed today.

As of 7:30 a.m., 4.2 inches of snow was recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It’s a frigid 28 degrees with a wind chill of 15.

Most areas in Hamilton, Clermont, Butler and Warren counties have 4.5 to 5.5 inches of snow, said meteorologist Seth Binau.

Butler County is operating on a Level 1 snow advisory, which means roads are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. They also could be icy. Motorists are urged to drive “very cautiously,” the sheriff’s office warns.

Light flurries will drift down throughout the day. The high temperature will be 34 degrees, and it will be mostly cloudy, Hickman said.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the entire region until 1 p.m., but the weather service expects it to be cancelled early.

Storm could bring biggest snowfall of season tonight

Posted by rrichardson March 5th, 2013, 8:45 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major blast of winter weather that could bring the biggest snowfall of the season is headed to Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky late tonight.

The storm will pack a heavy mix of 3-5 inches of snow, sleet and ice, with most of the accumulation falling as snow, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

The commute home from work should be OK, but late tonight and the morning commute Wednesday will be a much different picture.

Travel will be difficult at times after 7 p.m. and especially by midnight due to slick roads, reduced visibilities and snow accumulations, said meteorologist Andrew Snyder.

The storm is already affecting local travelers. Impending winter weather in the Chicago area has canceled a handful of flights to CVG and more than a dozen departures to the Windy City, according to cvgairport.com.

United Airlines, Copa Airlines, Scandinavian Air, and US Airways listed cancellations to CVG between 9:56 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. About 25 flights expected to leave CVG after 7 a.m. for Chicago were canceled.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 11 a.m. today until 1 p.m. Wednesday for most of the region: Hamilton, Clermont, Butler and Warren counties in Ohio; Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties in Kentucky and Dearborn and Ripley counties in southeastern Indiana.

Motorists are advised to “only travel in an emergency,” according to the weather service.

Snow flurries expected to remain light

Posted by rrichardson February 28th, 2013, 7:32 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Light snow flurries will fly this morning as winter keeps a firm grip over Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

It’s 33 degrees with a wind chill of 25. The high temperature later will only reach the upper 30s with a wind chill around 30, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

One-tenth of an inch of snow fell overnight, and more light snow flurries are expected to drift down this morning before mixing with a bit of rain later today.

Daytime temperatures will remain in the 30s as March arrives this weekend, 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and teens.

Frigid cold, light snow in the forecast

Posted by rrichardson February 20th, 2013, 7:14 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Bundle up as you head out the door in your warmest bubble coat and mittens.

Frigid temperatures will grip Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky today with occasional snow showers until 10 a.m.

A light dusting of new snow is possible with heavier flurries that could reduce visibility on the road at times, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Less than a half of an inch of snow could accumulate.

Slick spots could develop on the roads this morning, so take it easy on your way into work.

Wind chills are registering between 5 degrees below zero and above in the northern counties of Greater Cincinnati.

It’s 23 degrees with a wind chill of 10 at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport across the Ohio River in Hebron.

Later, the high temperature will struggle to reach 30 with wind chills in the upper teens and low 20s. Clouds will give way to a bit of sun by 5 p.m.  The overnight low will fall to 18 with wind chills in the single digits.

Thursday should be mostly sunny but cold with the mercury only reaching 34.

Late Thursday and early Friday, there’s a 90 percent chance for a wintry mix of snow and rain that could switch over to all freezing rain and sleet. Light ice accumulation is possible in time for the morning rush hour Friday.

The precipitation will turn into rain by 10 a.m. as the high temperature soars to near 50 degrees.
