Posted by rrichardson April 10th, 2013, 7:58 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

It’s is already a mild 65 this morning in downtown Cincinnati, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. That’s two degrees warmer than the normal daytime high for this time of year.

Be sure to get out and enjoy the weather this afternoon because a big change is coming Thursday as a cold front rolls in from the Mississippi Valley.

The front will bring the potential for severe and possibly damaging storms packing winds more than 60 mph and quarter-size hail, said meteorologist Jeff Sites.

Tornadoes also cannot be ruled out, although they are not the main threat.

Wet day, cold front coming

Posted by rrichardson December 4th, 2012, 8:41 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

You will definitely need an umbrella today with showers and thunderstorms in the forecast as a cold front approaches from the west, bringing cooler and more seasonal temperatures.

Spotty showers will approach Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky from the west between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and stick around most of the day. There could even be a rumble of thunder this afternoon.

The high temperature will reach 64 degrees by early afternoon before slipping into the upper 50s by 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Monday’s high reached 71, which is just four degrees shy of the record high on that date, set in 1982.

By Wednesday afternoon, the mercury will hover in the upper 40s under mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday night will be downright cold with a low plunging to 29.

Temperatures will begin to rebound a bit Thursday with a high of 50.

More showers and thunderstorms on tap for today

Posted by rrichardson September 27th, 2012, 8:00 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

More showers and thunderstorms are expected today before the forecast dries out for the weekend.

About a quarter of an inch of rain should fall by tonight. The high temperature will reach 72 degrees, which is normal for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

This weekend looks nice with plenty of sun and highs in the low 70s and overnight lows hovering in the upper 40s.

Originally, rain was predicted through Saturday. But now a wave of low pressure will move through Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, pushing the unsettled weather out a little sooner than expected, explained meteorologist Allen Randall.

This remains the fifth wettest September with 7.04 inches of rain, about 4.5 inches above normal, recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Why are things so wet this month, especially after such a hot and dry summer?

Blame Hurricane Isaac.

Remnants of the destructive Category 1 hurricane that caused severe damage on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. in late August dumped just over 6 inches across our the region at the beginning of the month.

“If it wasn’t for Isaac, rainfall totals would be below normal for the month of September,” Randall pointed out.

Rainfall overall this year remains down, So far, 28.73 inches have fallen. That’s 3.32 inches below the normal of 32.05 for this time in the year.

Get ready for a wet holiday weekend ahead

Posted by rrichardson August 31st, 2012, 8:07 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

After a long, hot and dry summer, anywhere from 2-3 inches of rain could soak Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky over the Labor Day weekend.

The remnants of what was once Hurricane Isaac are headed to the region and threaten to douse the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN-FM fireworks at Riverfest Sunday night. The annual event draws nearly a half million people along both the Ohio and Kentucky sides of the Ohio River.

Rain could be heavy at times this weekend through Monday, and there could be flooding, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It should start out mostly sunny this morning with temperatures in the 70s. By 5 p.m., clouds will increase as the high soars to a humid 91 degrees, said meteorologist Ashley Novak.

There’s a slight chance for rain tonight, but the best shot will be by daybreak Saturday. The overnight low will be 72.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday with up to a half inch of rain expected. The high temperature will be noticeably less humid at 83 degrees.

The heaviest rain is slated for Sunday, with up to an inch possible. It will be mostly cloudy with a high of 85.

Rain could still be falling off and on when fireworks start exploding across the river at 9:05 p.m., bringing summer to an official end.

The overnight low will be 71.

The soggy weather could hamper picnics and other outdoor events celebrating Labor Day on Monday. There’s a 70 percent chance for rain with a high of 83.

Rain will remain in the forecast through Tuesday before conditions dry out mid-week. Temperatures will remain in the mid-80s.

So far this year, we are about 8 inches below normal rainfall. Just 21.78 inches of rain has been recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Typically, 29.69 inches has fallen.
