Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:
After a long, hot and dry summer, anywhere from 2-3 inches of rain could soak Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky over the Labor Day weekend.
The remnants of what was once Hurricane Isaac are headed to the region and threaten to douse the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN-FM fireworks at Riverfest Sunday night. The annual event draws nearly a half million people along both the Ohio and Kentucky sides of the Ohio River.
Rain could be heavy at times this weekend through Monday, and there could be flooding, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
It should start out mostly sunny this morning with temperatures in the 70s. By 5 p.m., clouds will increase as the high soars to a humid 91 degrees, said meteorologist Ashley Novak.
There’s a slight chance for rain tonight, but the best shot will be by daybreak Saturday. The overnight low will be 72.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday with up to a half inch of rain expected. The high temperature will be noticeably less humid at 83 degrees.
The heaviest rain is slated for Sunday, with up to an inch possible. It will be mostly cloudy with a high of 85.
Rain could still be falling off and on when fireworks start exploding across the river at 9:05 p.m., bringing summer to an official end.
The overnight low will be 71.
The soggy weather could hamper picnics and other outdoor events celebrating Labor Day on Monday. There’s a 70 percent chance for rain with a high of 83.
Rain will remain in the forecast through Tuesday before conditions dry out mid-week. Temperatures will remain in the mid-80s.
So far this year, we are about 8 inches below normal rainfall. Just 21.78 inches of rain has been recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Typically, 29.69 inches has fallen.
