Storm mostly bypasses region – still affecting schools, traffic

Posted by rrichardson March 25th, 2013, 8:38 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major winter storm mostly bypassed Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overnight, leaving just light snow accumulation.

Most areas saw at least an inch of snow late Sunday and early today. Another inch could fall today.

Officially, 1 inch was recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and in places like Blue Ash, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Over on the west side of Hamilton County, Cheviot has 1.9 inches. To the north of Cincinnati, Lebanon and Oxford are waking up to 2 inches. In the Butler County seat of Hamilton, 3 inches were recorded.

There are some school closings and delays. Lebanon, Mount Healthy, Moeller and Northwest schools are all closed.

Check our school closings database.

Light snow will fall this morning and afternoon as the back-end of the storm moves out of southeastern Indiana into our region, said meteorologist Andy Latto.

A winter storm advisory remains in effect for most of the region until 2 p.m. Areas to the north of the city in Butler and Warren counties are under a winter storm warning.

Expect snow squalls during drive home

Posted by rrichardson March 13th, 2013, 5:32 pm Post a Comment

Janice Morse reports:

During this evening’s commute, “brief but intense” snow squalls could make driving dicey, the National Weather Service says.

An advisory, issued around 5 p.m., and remains in effect until 7 tonight for Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, the weather service said.

“These snow squalls will produce little in the way of accumulation. However, they can reduce visibilities significantly,” the advisory says, warning that drivers may be unable to see vehicles directly in front of them.

“At a minimum, road surfaces will be wet, which lessens traction,” the weather service said. “This, combined with the loss of visibility means the potential for traffic accidents is escalated with these squalls in the area.”

Motorists are advised to slow down but avoid rapid braking, which could cause drivers to lose control — or could cause rear-end collisions.

Drivers likely would remain in the squall line for 10 minutes or less, the weather service said.

Snow tapers off for morning commute

Posted by rrichardson March 6th, 2013, 8:39 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

A major winter storm socked Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overnight, dumping heavy snow across roads and closing hundreds of schools and businesses Wednesday.

Anywhere from 3 to 7 inches of snow blanketed our region, with the most north of metro Cincinnati, in Butler and Warren counties.

Mason and Kings schools are closed today.

As of 7:30 a.m., 4.2 inches of snow was recorded at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It’s a frigid 28 degrees with a wind chill of 15.

Most areas in Hamilton, Clermont, Butler and Warren counties have 4.5 to 5.5 inches of snow, said meteorologist Seth Binau.

Butler County is operating on a Level 1 snow advisory, which means roads are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. They also could be icy. Motorists are urged to drive “very cautiously,” the sheriff’s office warns.

Light flurries will drift down throughout the day. The high temperature will be 34 degrees, and it will be mostly cloudy, Hickman said.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the entire region until 1 p.m., but the weather service expects it to be cancelled early.

Relief in sight for Fields Ertel/Mason-Montgomery exit commuters

Posted by rrichardson March 1st, 2013, 3:52 pm Post a Comment

A proposed upgrade to the Fields Ertel/Mason-Montgomery interchange off Interstate 71 could reduce traffic there by as much as 55 percent, according to Warren County transportation officials.

More than two dozen residents crowded Deerfield Township’s trustees room Thursday to hear representatives of the Warren County Transportation District discuss upgrades to the traffic-clogged interchange near the border of southern Warren and northern Hamilton counties.

About 80,000 vehicles travel through the intersection each day, resulting in delays and backups that have long been a source of frustration for residents and commuters.

The area is a key economic engine for Warren County. Within miles of the interchange are, among others: Procter & Gamble’s Mason Business Center, Deerfield Towne Center shopping center, Kings Automall and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Mason campus.

“Statewide, this was the highest-ranked project in Ohio,” said Joseph Vogel, a planning and engineering administrator with the Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 08 in Lebanon.

Warren County Engineer Neil Tunison says the county is making phased improvements to the area.

Heavy downpours, possible thunderstorm today

Posted by rrichardson February 26th, 2013, 7:34 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Be sure to grab your umbrella as you head out the door this morning.

Heavy downpours and perhaps even a thunderstorm will soak Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky today, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It’s 39 degrees with a wind chill of 31 at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The mercury will reach the low-40s by noon. Later, the high temperature will reach 45 degrees.

The rain will continue tonight as the temperature falls to 35 degrees. By early Wednesday, the rain will turn into a wintry mix with some snow showers, which could make the morning rush hour slick.

The wintry mix will switch to all snow showers after 9 a.m. Less than half an inch of accumulation is possible.

It will feel noticeably colder and breezier by Wednesday afternoon as the mercury struggles to reach the upper 30s. Winds could gust as high as 25.

More snow showers could fall Wednesday night and again Thursday morning. The low will fall to 23 degrees, and the temperature will only rebound into the mid-30s by Thursday afternoon.

There’s a slight chance for more snow showers again Thursday night. The low will plunge to 29.

The month of March will definitely come in like a lion Friday with a high temperature only reaching 36 degrees. It should be cloudy and dry.

The weekend will be colder than normal for this time of year. Daytime highs typically reach the mid or upper 40s.

Instead, expect high temperatures of 33 both Saturday and Sunday along with a mix of clouds.

The cold trend will stick around through at least the first part of next week.

The truck truck driver lost control on an icy lane just before 5:30 a.m. and crashed into the overpass on the right side of the highway in Deerfield Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lebanon post.

The driver was not injured, but the right front tire dangling off the overpass for about a half hour until crews pulled the vehicle down, a dispatcher said.

The entire northbound side of the highway was shut down for about 30 minutes. It reopened about 6 a.m. The right lanes remain closed until further notice.

Now rescue crews are struggling to clean up a large fuel spill, expected to take the next few hours.
