Mason Schools looking for volunteer mentors

Volunteers are needed to mentor grade and middle school students in the Mason school district.

Now in its fifteenth year, the Mason mentoring program pairs adult volunteers (ages 21 and up) with students in fourth through eighth grades for one hour each week during the school day.

“There are a lot of kids out there who need a little extra encouragement,” said Sue Shackleford, program director.  “Mentors are just a little more support in these students’ lives.”

Girl Scouts looking for volunteer recruiters

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is looking for volunteers to assist with school recruiting this fall.

Campaign volunteers are needed to host recruitment and sign-up events at local area schools between August and October.  Troop leaders are also needed year-round.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio serves more than 1,500 elementary schools in 32 counties throughout Western Ohio and Southeastern Indiana.

Volunteers must complete an application, provide references and undergo a background check.

Mental Health Recovery Services seeking to fill board vacancies

Mental Health Recovery Services of Warren and Clinton Counties is searching for volunteers to fill vacancies on its board of directors.

The organization plans, funds, monitors and evaluates a system of services for residents with serious mental and emotional disorders and/or substance addictions.

Applicants should be residents of Warren or Clinton counties and be able to attend board meetings, held monthly at 5:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month in Lebanon or Wilmington.

Mason mock trial team looking for volunteer legal mentors

Mason High School is looking for volunteer attorneys to serve as legal advisors for its mock trial team.

Volunteer legal advisers are needed to help students write and edit opening and closing statements, craft direct examination questions and provide direction on objections and court room proceedings.

The season runs from October through February. Meetings are held at the high school from 2:15-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays. The team also has scrimmages on Saturday mornings and competitions Fridays in February and March.

“Your attendance at scrimmages and competitions is preferred but not necessary,” said advisor Danielle Lyons, MHS social studies teacher.

Prospective volunteers should send a letter of interest to Student Activities Director Lori Fox-Allen at foxl@mason.k12.oh.us or Lyons at lyonsd@mason.k12.oh.us.

Deerfield Twp. seeking to fill zoning board vacancies

Deerfield Township is looking for residents to serve on its Board of Zoning Appeals and Zoning Commission.

Here’s a description of  the two groups as listed on the township’s website:

The Board of Zoning Appeals hears requests for variances of the regulations of the Zoning Resolution, requests for the approval of a conditional use, and hears appeals of the decisions of the Zoning Inspector.

The Zoning Commission reviews requests for changes in zoning district classification, making recommendations to the Board of Trustees, and reviews development within the Planned Unit Development (PUD) and site plan review process.

Applications are being accepted through April 20 and are available online at www.choosedeerfield.com.

Judges needed for school History Day competition

Mason Schools is looking for volunteers to serve as judges at its annual History Day competition.

The popular event for middle and high school students is set for the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Mason Middle School. Judges will evaluate student projects to determine which students advance to the regional competition on March 31.

“Although a passion for history is always appreciated, judges who have experience in research, the visual arts, web design, or those who would just love to see what these spectacular students have created are all welcomed,” said Mason teacher Erin White.

Warren County Historical Society looking for volunteers

The Warren County Historical Society is seeking volunteer interns to assist with its digital archive project.

The goal of the multi-year project is to digitize and index thousands of letters, records, reports, photographs and other records housed in the society’s research library and vaults.

Volunteers can choose to work in specific archives, including photos, scrapbooks, family history or historical research.

Training will be provided in basic archival and preservation practices.  The society is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 105 South Broadway Street in Lebanon.

Volunteer judges needed for Mason Science Fair

Interested in science?  Then Mason Schools is looking for you.

Volunteers are needed to judge the district’s annual Science Fair competition, set for Thursday, Feb. 2 at Mason Middle School.

About 250 middle and high school students are expected to compete in the popular competition.  Judges should be interested in science and able to volunteer that day beginning with a complimentary dinner at 3 p.m.  and ending with an 8 p.m. awards ceremony.

Volunteers and food donations needed for Warren County food drive

Volunteers and food donations are needed for the annual Warren County Food Drive now through Dec. 31.

The “Yes We Can” food drive, sponsored by Warren County Community Services, supports seven area Warren County food pantries.

Volunteers are needed to assist with sorting and packing of food at the campaign’s Lebanon warehouse, transport of food from collection sites to the warehouse and to make phone calls to collection locations, pantries and volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities are available in the morning or evening hours.

Food donations are accepted at collection barrels located at government sites throughout Warren County, including the Mason Municipal Center at 6000 Mason-Montgomery Road.
