An Ultimate Frisbee competition with national significance is scheduled to fly into Mason Memorial Day weekend.
The Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the 2014 Division I Ultimate Frisbee College Championships May 23-26. USA Ultimate, the national governing body for Ultimate Frisbee, made the announcement Monday.
“Ohio, and especially Southwest Ohio, has vibrant and growing Ultimate communities,” Will Deaver, managing director of competition and athlete programs for USA Ultimate, said in a news release. “We have a lot of confidence the event will be an incredible experience for participants and a great showcase for the sport.”
After conclusion of the regular Ultimate season, more than 14,000 college athletes in more than 700 teams enter the USA Ultimate Championship Series, according to the release. A field of 20 mens and 20 womens teams compete to be crowned national champions on Memorial Day weekend.
The championships will be held at Heritage Oak Park at Mason High School in conjunction with the Cincinnati Ultimate Players Association, according to the release.
Ben Huffman, director of sports marketing for the Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that over the past six years, events held in collaboration with USA Ultimate and Cincinnati Ultimate Players Association has brought more than $1 million into the community.
Men and womens semifinal and final games will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with follow-up coverage on ESPNU.
