Get ready for near record heat today

Posted by rrichardson April 18th, 2013, 8:47 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Make sure to put on the sunscreen today.

The mercury will soar to 83 degrees, just shy of the record high of 87 on this date in 1896, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Current temperatures are already very warm this morning. It’s 63 in downtown Cincinnati.  Later, we could see rain and thunderstorms around 5 p.m. Winds will gust 30 to 40 mph as a strong cold front comes in.

Overnight, there is a slight risk of severe weather. The main threats will be winds that could whip more than 60 mph and quarter-size hail, said meteorologist Scott Hickman.

Tornadoes cannot be ruled out from developing between midnight and 4 a.m.

Motorists, especially those driving vehicles that sit up high, should be prepared for strong cross winds on east-to-west oriented roads, the weather service warns.  Loose outdoor items may be blown about by stronger wind gusts, so be sure to secure items such as garbage cans and table umbrellas.

Heavy rain could slow the morning commute Friday. Pockets of flooding could occur on area roads and creeks.

Temperatures will drop like a rock with this cold front. Friday’s high will struggle to reach 49, and the overnight low will plunge to 35.

Patchy frost could develop before 8 a.m. Saturday.  It will be mostly sunny the rest of the day with a high around 57.

Wintry mix, falling temps today

Posted by rrichardson February 19th, 2013, 8:46 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

High winds howled overnight, gusting up to 60 mph as rain pelted down across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

No injuries or major damages were reported, but there is are some power outages, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. More than 1,100 Duke Energy customers are without power, mostly in Boone and Hamilton counties.

It’s 44 degrees this morning at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Winds have calmed to 35 mph, but the mercury will free fall today into the 30s by lunchtime as a cold front moves in from the west. Wind chills will be in the 20s.

That is a major change from a sun-splashed high of 60 degrees on Monday, just eight degrees shy of the record on that date, set in 1948, said meteorologist Andy Latto.

Today will be dramatically different with snow showers falling off and on between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. No accumulation is expected.

Later, it will be mostly cloudy and bitterly cold with the overnight low plunging to 17. Wind chills could fall into the single digits.

The cold blast will stick around through Thursday.  It will be mostly sunny Wednesday and Thursday as high temperatures remain in the 30s.

Normally, the high temperature is around 44, and the overnight low is 27, Latto said.

By early Friday, we will see a wintry mix of rain and snow that could switch over to sleet.  It will be mostly cloudy by Friday afternoon with a high of 46 degrees.

The overnight low will fall into the 30s.  Weekend temperatures will hover in the 40s with plenty of sun.

By Sunday, we will be flirting with 50 degrees as the high soars to 48.

Winds, light snow continue Friday, then move out

Posted by rrichardson December 21st, 2012, 7:58 am Post a Comment

Brenna R. Kelly reports:

By this evening the snow and winds should have moved on, the National Weather Service said.

Though some snow showers will continue to blow across the region Friday, accumulations should be light, the Weather Service said. And the high winds that have battered the area since Thursday afternoon will die down during the day and be gone by tonight.

On Friday morning less than 2,500 Duke Energy customers in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky remained without electricity according to the company’s website. Most of the outages were in Hamilton County where the utility had 1,715 customers out. In Butler County there were 272 customers out as of 9 a.m.

At the height of the windy weather overnight, the utility reported 22,000 customers were without power. As of 8:45 p.m., Hamilton County was hardest-hit, with about 15,000 customers affected.
