Mason offers free gardening workshop

Warren County Master Gardener Cindy DeSerna will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29 at the Mason Community Center.

DeSerna’s hands-on workshop, “A, B, Seeds of Gardening,” will discuss good planting techniques.  The event is free and open to the community.

The program is sponsored by the Mason Community Garden.  The City of Mason has designated an are on Mason-Morrow-Millgrove Road across from the Mason Sports Park as a community garden.  Applications are accepted from individuals and groups interested in a 10 by 15-foot plot.  For more information on the garden program, go to www.imaginemason.org.

The workshop will be offered in the Senior Center of the Community Center at 6050 Mason-Montgomery Road.

Paint your own pottery at community workshop

Star Glazers Deerfield Township will host a paint-your-own pottery event from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Snyder House at Cottell Park, 5847 Irwin-Simpson Road.

Star Glazers, a mobile pottery service, will lead the class.  Costs range depending on project, from $8 to 25, plus a studio fee of $2 for non-residents. Cash or check is accepted at the time of the class.

All supplies will be provided, with finished pieces fired and available for pick-up within two weeks at Deerfield Township offices.

Art workshops help women rediscover creative sides

Kick Booty Creative Boo[s]t for Grown Gals

The Mason-Deerfield Arts Alliance is teaming up with Creative Collaborative to help women reconnect with their creative sides.

The organizations will hold six “Kick Booty Creative Boo[s]t Camp for Grown Gals” sessions from 10 a.m. – 2  pm. on Saturdays next year at the Snyder House at Cottell Park, 5847 Irwin-Simpson Road, Deerfield Township.

Kick Booty Creative Boo[s]t for Grown Gals The first session kicks off on Jan. 14 with a session themed “Coming Home to Creativity.”  Other sessions are held on March 17, May 12, Sept. 8, Nov. 17 and Dec. 8.

Creative Collaborative founders Robin Ok and Glenda Miles will lead sessions, which are designed to provide women with insight and hands-on tools for befriending the creative process, writing prompts and time to journal, said Meredith Raffel, MDAA executive director.

Participants will have the chance to create and take home art projects such as collage, jewelry, shrines and other crafts.

“We are thrilled to present programming that allows women time and support to connect with themselves and each other, ” said Raffel.  “‘Kick Booty’ is a safe place for their self-expression and much needed ‘me’ time, and women who have attended in 2011 have been truly delighted.”

Cost includes $55 per session, with discounts available for group registrations.  Cost includes lunch, a t-shirt and art supplies.  Register online at http://kickcreativebootyinjanuary.eventbrite.com.

Deerfield Twp. to hold free Santa’s Workshop Saturday

Deerfield Township will hold a free Santa’s Workshop for township residents on Saturday.

The workshop, which meets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Snyder House, offers a visit from Santa, craft instruction and a chance for children to create gifts to give for the holidays.

The event is geared towards youth ages 3-8, who must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is required — click here to register. The Snyder House is at 5848 Irwin Simpson Road. For more information, call the township at 513-701-6958.

St. Susanna to hold super couponing workship tonight

Do shows like TLC’s “Extreme Couponing” leave you in awe?

St. Susanna Parish will host a free coupon workshop at 7 p.m. this evening to teach the art of “super” couponing in order to help provide more food for the needy.

Donations of non-perishable food items are encouraged.  The class will be held in Undercroft of the church at 616 Reading Road.  For more information, call Marci Langenecker at 513-856-7461.

Northeast Cincinnati Chamber to hold business marketing workshop

The Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking workshop on Friday, May 20 at Afidence, 516 West Main Street, Mason.

The workshop, themed “Are you Easy to Refer,” takes place from 8 to 10 a.m. and is presented by the Chamber and The Referral Institute.

The class covers business strategies in referral marketing and promotion.   Cost is $35 Chamber members; $45 non-members.

Two Mason teachers selected to attend prestigious national workshop

Mason Middle School Social Science teachers Jennifer Page and Chris Underwood are among 80 educators nationwide to be selected to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities workshop.

The Landmarks in American History and Culture workshop will be held this summer at Penn State Capitol College.

The five-day workshop is geared for K-12 teachers and will cover Benjamin Franklin and life in 18th century America.  The teachers will receive a $1,500 stipend from NEH to cover costs.

More than 300 applicants applied to attend.  Candidates were selected on the basis of a portfolio which included a professional resume, letters of recommendation, an essay on the applicant’s professional background, interest in the subject and perspectives and skills the candidate could contribute.

“This year’s selection process was particularly difficult.  Ms. Page and Ms. Underwood’s selection indicates the excellence of their work as teachers, and their commitment to expanding the educational opportunities they offer to their students,” said George Boudreau, project director.

Northeast Cincinnati Chamber to hold business seminar on Friday

The Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce will hold a business seminar from 8-10 a.m. Friday, April 15.

The “Moving Your Relationships to Profit” seminar, presented by Referral Institute, will cover topics on how to interact, foillow-up and retain customers.

Cost is $35 for Chamber members; $99 for non-members. The seminar will be held at Afidence, Inc. at 516 West Main Street in Mason.

Local artist to lead oil painting workshop on Saturday

Local artist Chuck Marshall will lead a “Color Mixing for Oil Painting” workshop from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at at the Snyder House at Cottell Park, 5837 Irwin-Simpson Road, Deerfield Township.

Marshall attended one year at the Cincinnati Art Academy before moving to southern California, where he studied at the California Art Institute.  While in California, he had the chance to study with select artists in the Plein Air style.

Marshall has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer.  His fine art has been featured in works such as International Artist and American Artist magazine and is included in private and corporate collections.
